GOP Rep Says His Party Threw Katie Britt 'to the Wolves'

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) defended Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) on Sunday after her infamous SOTU reply, claiming she was “thrown to the wolves” by the Republican Party following her poorly received speech.

In a fiery thread posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, Roy took issue with Republican leadership, which he described as “SwampGOP” who “doesn't get it, as evidenced by the SOTU debacle.”

He continued in one reply, describing leadership as “Uniparty, establishment, swamp, beltway elite, ruling class… pick your poison,” he added. “All true.”

He criticized GOP “powers-that-be” for choosing Britt to make the important speech despite her lack of experience, writing leadership threw “a freshman Senator to the wolves by asking her to give the rebuttal knowing she had not yet given even a Senate speech.”

1. I hate Chip Roy, but I'm not sure he's entirely wrong here.

It was always destined to be a train wreck. The choice, the speech, the "facts", the aftermath -- all of it was a disaster, and the people involved had to know that was the likely outcome.

It's as though they were setting her up to fail.

Curry favor with their adored leader by making a bit of an ass of herself and telling a few lies about sex trafficking at the border. Her original calculation may have been that it was worth the risk in order to raise her national profile.

The target audience is *not* me. Not anyone likely to be reading this board. Not anyone who's going to be bothered by a bunch of lying. Repug-likans like their women mendacious (and not too threatening) Maybe the suburban moms she was likely targeting ate up her melodrama and housewife cosplay. Probably she's seeing more of the downside than she expected (SNL ridicule, near-immediate fact-checking exposing her lies), but long-term, sh'e's still got the re-pug electorate's extremely short memory on her side.

And, hey, it's gotta be little flattering that she was portrayed by ScarJo

7. A highly educated sitting US senator is so easily duped?

She has a law degree and was an advisor to a previous US senator.

But she is totally clueless about politics and so easily set up?

Sounds like she should be doing a much easier job.

9. Her husband is rich. She most likely has a nanny and housekeeper.

She is probably never in the kitchen.

Yeah, I don’t see Sen Katie Britt (R - Stepford) as the shrinking violet.
