Let's say he strokes out a week before the election. I'm thinking his VP selection would be the new nominee? Plus this new nominee would select their running mate? How would that play out?

(119,838 posts)AFAIK the party has to go back and nominate somebody; that person would choose a running mate, not necessarily the original one, and the party would have to accept that ticket. It would be a goat rodeo for sure, since ballots everywhere would have been printed and some people would already have voted. I don't think those early votes would necessarily be given automatically to the new ticket, but I really don't know.
Whatever else happens, though, the situation would be greatly improved if TFG is no longer with us. But he's been looking like crap for a long time, and Satan has yet to call him home.

After the convention, almost certainly the VP pick will be the candidate as the party wouldn't have time or organization to pick anyone else.
After Trump gets enough delegates but before the convention. That is going to be one he'll of a pissing match convention as all these 2nd tier powers bribe delegates for their vote. I assume money and lots of it exchange hands. . .

(18,104 posts)As long as whoever they pick to replace him will successfully divide the far right and right-of-center electorate.
He did only get 60% in South Carolina. Some of the 40% of Haley voters will suck it up and vote for him in November. But I bet not all of them.

(17,035 posts)The electoral college votes would tally for the ticket as though he were alive.
When it came time to be sworn in, the vp would be sworn in and become potus.
Just my guess. Alternatively the new speaker of the house would become potus,

(17,035 posts)Depending on the timing, there might not be time to replace his name on printed or early/overseas ballots.
Plus, it might actually help with the hardcore magat vote who might not vote for anyone not named trump.

(24,514 posts)the Vice president doesn't get to take the president's place before the president is elected. I'm guessing they may have to vote for the dead guy which would be a better choice than if he were still alive.😊

(888 posts)Trump dying in late October would mean he'd stay on the ballot for election day. Too late to change everything.

(72,177 posts)The whole rot: Get rid of the Electoral College; the years of campaigning and cash; the dead debates ahead of which everybody knows what the candidates claim and which candidate we're voting for.
