Prosecutors revealed that the so-called whistleblower in the Hunter Biden investigation was feeding disinformation directly from Russian spies to Republican lawmakers. Alexander Smirnov admitted that "officials associated with Russian intelligence" were involved with passing along a story about President Joe Biden's son that became the basis of allegations in the GOP impeachment inquiry, and prosecutors said the former FBI informant was actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections.
NBC News reporter Tom Winter told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday that revelations about the sources for Smirnov's claims were nothing short of stunning.
"I think when you look at this in the totality of what was in the detention memo, which was extraordinary I mean, prosecutors use these to really put the hammer down and show a bit about what type of evidence they will bring forward," Winter said. "When you look at the filing [Tuesday], they went really deep and unclassifying information, information that was unclassified on Valentine's Day, when Smirnov was arrested, deep into his background, that he was a 10-year-plus source for the FBI."
"He had a handler that he talked to nearly every day, which is a lot, by the way, for somebody who is a confidential human source," Winter added. "[He was] somebody who had been run out of the Seattle field office, assigned to an agent who works in the criminal squad there, and the key line from this, and we'll show a portion of the document that was filed [Tuesday], is that it says during his custodial interview on Feb. 14, so it occurs after Smirnov is in handcuffs, he admitted that officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story about business person one who we've publicly identified is Hunter Biden. So he told the FBI after he is in handcuffs, 'Yes, I did this, and it came from individuals associated with Russian intelligence.'"

(57,246 posts)... every day and what they are looking at is done so slow that it would take huge resources to follow this small fry around for extended time to even catch them. the trick is to find who he reports to and go up the line. He may have been in FBI counter intellegence sights for years as they tried to lock the string of agents down.
There US sources in Moscow who have crafting for years and the FSB knows who a lot of them are. It's all part of the same game.
Hunter Biden just might provide what it takes to expose the relationship between FSB and the GOP.

This could be the lead we need to prove what seems to be perfectly clear - the direct Russian GOP links.

The problem we have in this country is not just Trump. We have a rather large group working to overthrow our democracy and they know no bounds, evidently.
The McCarthy hunt for communists under every rock in the 50s was a delusion, but it set us up for disregarding signs of dangerous alliances within our body politic. We really need to dive into more investigations and sniff out the traitors. They are out there, in plain sight on Capitol Hill and many state governments.

(57,246 posts)... are such big news when they are caught. Part of the problem is the HUGE amount amount of secured information and at the same time how many people in this country have a clearance.

(2,212 posts)And that is why Trump had to try and ruin him, or at least end his FBI Counter-intel roll. Strzok pissed Putin off years ago by busting a big ring a lot like the one portrayed on the TV show, The Americans. But you probably know about that too.
Like Comer and too many other office holders of the GOP, Trump was a very compliant Russian asset. We voters need to pay more attention to the people we put in office. And, agree with you, too many people here have too much access to too much sensitive info. And as long as a president can waive clearance issues for his/her henchmen, it will only get more dangerous.

(57,246 posts)... the CIA is not law enforcement, and CIA has no mandate to perform intelligence operations on US soil. One of my wife's favorite jobs was when she was the liaison with Disney security. One of her duties was to find "cooperative" foreign Disney employees. Plus she got a family pass good all year.
Can you explain why this guy was an FBI CI instead of CIA?

(57,246 posts)... they can help investigate and release information and evidence to the FBI. But when CIA gets a foreign agent to show up in the US, it's the FBI that puts the cuffs on.
I forgot to add that my wife also found jobs for defectors and their family at Disney.

(57,246 posts)... I had clearance over "secrets" that just plain were no secret. Some of the information could be found in news papers and photos, that while were not specifically about a specific secret, but offered correlated information that derived the original secret - Sort of like Ford refusing to say how many spokes were on a new models wheels, but then released a photo of the car in a press release where anyone could count spokes if inclined.
Too many secrets, too many clearances.

I've run into Mossad here in Austin. They had a program to get into local businesses around the US with agents selling art. They were 'recruiting' and identifying assets.

Disinformation/propaganda works because people are always believing stuff. (and they love to gossip)
Solution? Stop believing stuff, and if that's too hard, at least don't pass it along.
i don't think so but it's good for opinion sake~

(384 posts)I was just trying to point out that some Republicans are swallowing lies perpetrated by Russia, metaphorically imbibing Russian "vodka". I came up with the metaphor because I was curious about the similarity between "Smirnoff" and "Smirnov" and I found a link in the Wikipedia entry for Smirnoff identifying Smirnov as the founder of the distillery. I was not trying to be misleading or controversial in any way, and I wasn't passing on anyone else's idea. Also, "Kool-Aid" is a brand name, so only the holder of the brand could assign a "translation" into Russian or any other language. I don't know how my innocuous post became inflammatory.

(6,850 posts)that it would never be taken seriously without a need to tack on the "sarcasm" smiley. I suppose I was wrong about that. It could be that people have been exposed to so much absurdity from here-to-fore serious sources, they've gotten "gun shy". Sort of a social tragedy, really, the end of confidence in institutions book ended by erosion of self-confidence and the acceptance-as-fact of blatant lies. They got us coming and going.

How much of our media has been buying into Russian disinformation, knowingly or unknowingly?
Major media figures in the bag for Russia, GOP lawmakers collaborating with Russian agents, American citizens being subject to Russian influence peddling. Dangerous stuff. Worse than Watergate.
If our media does not raise a major stink over this, at least as much as they did over other scandals like Watergate, or even Whitewater, than they have no credibility left.
