"You set me up, bitch!" -Barry when he got busted for smoking crack
Former Washington DC Mayor and current Councilperson Marion Barry is no stranger to inserting atotally inappropriate racial element into fairly innocuous statements. And he did it again this week, spoiling an otherwise generous holiday tradition.
Mr. Barrys turkey giveaway is an annual tradition, and in years past he has refused to say who has paid for the turkeys or whether the donors have contracts with the city. Pressed this year by the Washington City Papers Alan Suderman, Mr. Barry said its only liberal white folks who are interested in disclosure rules or, for that matter, other good-government initiatives, such as the citys open-meetings law. After vowing not to disclose the donors (Im not ever telling), Mr. Barry released a statement that cited the involvement of Chartered Health Plan, Wal-Mart, WC Smith, Chapman Development, Intralot, United Healthcare, Fort Myer Construction and Union Temple Baptist Church.
C'mon now. As much as I admire the gesture of giving away turkeys to needy families, does Barry really mean to imply that only white liberals care about transparency and corporate influences over our elected officials?

(154,021 posts)Among other things, require government agencies to pst the minutes and tell you three days in advance that a meeting is to be held and publish the agenda.
We rely on it.
And when they hold meetings without telling us, they can find themselves in court. It also regulates how they can do business in private to avoid business done in closed door settings. Oh those can be held, see legal matters, but they still need to inform the public.
All states have equivalents. The Brown Act is California's version of open government.

Give me a sec and will quote from your story

There open meeting law, aka the Brown Act equivalent.

(8,702 posts)Yrs ago when he was the DC mayor, a report came out on tv to not drink DC's water without boiling it first because it had become contaminated. So what does Marion Barry do but go on tv and say the water was just fine and drink the water with the camera rolling. So the paper said the environmental dept freaked out and had to dump "a gazillion gallons of bleach" in the water system to protect the public and then post a warning to only shower with your bathroom door open because you could be overcome with chlorine fumes.
