Putin Signs Decree Declaring Sale Of Alaska Null & Void

At first, I thought this was just more Russian trolling of Western democracies but it is a bit more than that as Putin is also serving this up for domestic consumption, giving the ultranationalists something to talk about and further legitimizing the invasion of Ukraine. And it seems to be working. One of the larger Russian Telegram channels, Two Majors, suggested starting with Alaska.

"We suggest starting with Alaska," the Two Majors Telegram channel—which has more than 530,000 subscribers—wrote. Beyond that, the blogger wrote that the Kremlin should look to "Dnieper Ukraine, Bessarabia, the Grand Duchy of Finland, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Central Asian states of Russian Turkestan, most of the Baltic provinces, and a significant part of Poland."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new decree relating to Moscow's historic real estate holdings abroad, a move interpreted by ultranationalist bloggers as a foundation for future revanchism against Russia's neighbors—and even the U.S. The decree, signed by the president late last week, allocates funds for the search, registration, and legal protection of Russian property abroad, including property in the former territories of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

This would include Alaska, swathes of eastern and central Europe, large chunks of central Asia, and parts of Scandinavia. Russia's Foreign Ministry and its presidential administration's Foreign Property Management Enterprise are directed to carry out the work, ordered to find, register, and protect "property" in question.

10. It was sold to the USA by Tsar Alexander II in 1867 for $7.2 million
Mon Jan 22, 2024, 01:24 PM
Jan 2024

From Wikipedia:

William H. Seward, the 24th United States Secretary of State, negotiated the Alaska Purchase (referred to pejoratively as Seward's Folly) with the Russians in 1867 for $7.2 million. Russia's contemporary ruler Tsar Alexander II, the Emperor of the Russian Empire, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland, also planned the sale; the purchase was made on March 30, 1867. Six months later the commissioners arrived in Sitka and the formal transfer was arranged; the formal flag-raising took place at Fort Sitka on October 18, 1867. In the ceremony 250 uniformed U.S. soldiers marched to the governor's house at "Castle Hill", where the Russian troops lowered the Russian flag and the U.S. flag was raised. This event is celebrated as Alaska Day, a legal holiday on October 18.

Before that, the Russian Empire only had possession of Alaska for a little over 100 years, and they did a poor job of protecting it or developing it during that time. The Russian Tsar's government never really colonized or occupied the Alaskan territory and it's totally bizarre that Putin would think he has any claim. If any group has a claim to Alaska it would be the indigenous peoples, and our government has made every effort to provide for them. Our federal administrations since 1959 have done way more to help the indigenous peoples of Alaska than the Russian empire ever did.

This really makes Putin sound like a ridiculous blowhard.

Biden openly stating that he approves of unfreezing Russian assets (held in the West) and giving them to Ukraine, something in the neighborhood of $300 billion.

With Putin (like Trump) it's always about vengeance and breast-beating. Putin is gearing up for another faux election, so the Strongman act needs more gas, particularly with his failures in Ukraine and a deeply dissatisfied population.

This 'Returning the Russian Empire to its former glory' is a repeating meme in Putin-World.

Just another reason Trump needs a slamming in November.

In 1867, the United States bought Alaska from the Russian Empire, significantly expanding its territory. Fast forward to January 2024: Amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine and U.S. support for Ukraine, a rumor surfaced online. It claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the 1867 sale of Alaska "illegal." For instance, one Reddit post on the topic read, "Putin stokes tensions with US, declares 1867 sale of Alaska 'illegal.'"

State Department responds to Putin on Alaska: 'Certainly he's not getting it back'

The State Department on Monday brushed off reports of Russian President Vladimir Putin ordering his government to look into the nation’s former “real estate” abroad, saying Alaska would be staying in American hands. Putin signed a new decree last week to allocate funds for the research and registration of Russian property overseas, including that in former territories of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, Russian state media TASS reported.

The decree, which comes amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, did not specifically mention Alaska, though it caught the attention of military bloggers, who argued Putin was using the decree to declare the 1867 Russian sale of the Last Frontier State to the U.S. is illegal. “Well, I think I can speak for all of us in the U.S. government to say that certainly he’s not getting it back,” State Department principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said during a Monday press briefing, prompting laughter from his audience.

The Institute for the Study of War last week noted the “exact parameters of what constitutes current or historical Russia property are unclear.”

“The Kremlin may use the ‘protection’ of its claimed property in countries outside of its internationally recognized borders to forward soft power mechanisms in post-Soviet and neighboring states ultimately aimed at internal destabilization,” the institute wrote in an assessment of the Russian offensive campaign.
