The border doesn't sound very crisis-y to me if that's the way you're gonna talk

The negotiations between Democratic, Republican, and independent senators over the last two months have been difficult and contentious. Democrats want to advance an emergency package that would provide support for, among others, U.S. allies in Ukraine. Republicans have balked, saying they’d only consider the aid package if Democrats agree to far-right immigration and border policies.

To be sure, this isn’t entirely new. A few weeks ago, as the Senate negotiations progressed, some prominent far-right House members said the bill, whatever it might eventually look like, would almost certainly be rejected in the Republican majority in the lower chamber. As they saw it, negotiations include concessions, and GOP members would only tolerate getting everything they want without exception.

But the CNN report included one quote that was especially striking.

“Let me tell you, I’m not willing to do too damn much right now to help a Democrat and to help Joe Biden’s approval rating,” Republican Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas said. “I will not help the Democrats try to improve this man’s dismal approval ratings. I’m not going to do it.”

1. Isn't that the very definition of "party over country"?

They'd rather their "crisis" continue, no matter what the human cost and despite their insistance on the damage this is supposedly doing to the country, as long as it fosters their own political prospects.

The fact that this is acceptable to so many people is just jaw dropping.

2. Any media outlet referring to a border "crisis" is pushing Republican propganda

If you are reporting unbiased news, you would refer to it as the problem or potential problem at the border. If you are spewing propaganda to try and get Republicans elected so they can destroy the country you will parrot their hyperbolic "crisis" talking point

3. It's a humanitarian crisis.

Thousands of people crossing into our country every day, with nothing but the clothes on their backs, driven by desperation to escape from places where they are raped, murdered, and starved, many of them dying along the way, is a crisis.

You are being too literal and failing to appreciate the nuance and political implication (in terms of support for Democrats and liberals) in the choice of words.

The media uses the term crisis to mislead the public into believing our President is failing at his job. You are using it in a different context, but that is not the context in which the overwhelming percentage of American voters would use it. While you see the issue as a world or humanitarian crisis (I will not disagree), it is not a crisis for America, per se.

These are not criminals or monsters streaming over the southern boarder threatening to destroy our country, which is the Republican narrative. While I wouldn't expect you to remotely agree with that view, it's important to be mindful of it and how the evil right-wing are using words to generate harmful propaganda

What exactly have efforts to portray the problem at the border as a crisis actually produced?

That was in reference to the Iraqis, who were no threat to us, but made a good scapegoat when a staggeringly unqualified soft-brained repuke President needed to juice up his re-election campaign.

And list out all the times Republicans have torpedoed any meaningful legislation on this issue. Go back to only as far as Dubya. It would prove that this has been the GOP's MO all along.

He supported immigration reform with the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. Both sections of Congress were controlled by Democrats. The bill was introduced and supported by Sen. Ted Kennedy and Majority Leader Reid and Sen. McCain. It did not pass. Why? Liberal Senators and labor unions did not like a few positions in the bill and filibustered it. The House side did not bring it up for a vote. The perfect became the enemy of the good and a good bill died.

12. Partisan Republican politics "trumps" the good of the nation.

The Republicans want the issue to be up front, but aren't in favor of President Biden and the Democrats getting legislation passed to solve the problem.
A bi-partisan solution isn't something they want to be a part of.
It's got to be their solution, or nothing at all.
