NYU accounting professor Eli Bartov testified yesterday as Donald Trump's hired expert witness that he did not believe that Trump committed fraud when he filed financial disclosures in connections with his applications for bank loans. We learned today on cross-examination that Trump paid him $877,500 for his work and testimony on the case.
Bartov testified that he was paid $1,350 an hour and worked a total of 650 hours on the case.
In his testimony yesterday, Bartov claimed that someone valuing their apartment at three times market value because the square footage was tripled was "not that unusual." He also compared Trump's disclaimer clauses on his statement as akin to the Surgeon General's warnings that smoking causes cancer.
What Trump has mostly touted about Bartov's testimony was that he said he saw "no evidence of accounting fraud" in the documents, but he was not permitted to give his opinion on Trump's intent when he inflated the values on some of his properties.

(17,177 posts)Because the fraud apparently wasn't in the accounting (which was, I believe, done by an outside firm anyway) -- it was in the valuations that were given to them.

(53,778 posts)At least somebody got paid by trump. And it's backfiring on him. He should've paid for better lawyers. but I'm glad he didn't.
But he'd still eventually be found guilty on some of the 91 felony charges against him, even with good lawyers.

was paid a shit-ton of money to counter Judge Engoron's already established fraud decision...
Eli Barton now joins a long list of supposed professionals, doctors, lawyers, accountants, more than willing to prostitute themselves in the name of Trump...

(12,586 posts)Whether or not T***p committed fraud has been determined. The only issue now is damages. TFG can pay $300,000 to get someone to give his opinion there wasn't fraud, but the only thing the judge cares about is how much the property was worth at the time of the loan application was submitted or the taxes were paid.
T. is upset that he didn't get to do his song and dance in front of a jury, so he's resorted to having his minions threaten the judge's law clerk to get his way. Typical mob boss behavior.

Absolutely standard for opposition to ask experts how much they've been paid.

(65,042 posts)I'd say this guy isn't much of an expert.
The fact that fraud was committed has been proven TWICE!
But, he saw nothing irregular?

(65,042 posts)I've been an expert witness 8 times. I only got paid 5 times, and nothing close to this number per hour. (And, I never spent anywhere close to 600+ hours on a case.)
I wonder how typical it is for an expert witness to get paid at this level.
Or is the fee commiserate with a guarantee of favorable testimony.
