Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney would rather cede power to Democrats than see members of her own party win in 2024, she said, calling a Republican majority a threat, and warning of an existential crisis leading up to next year's election.
I believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the Republican Party, but the Republican Party of today has made a choice and they haven't chosen the Constitution, and so I do think it presents a threat if the Republicans are in the majority in January 2025, the Wyoming Republican said during an interview with CBS, when asked whether she would prefer a Democratic majority in 2025.
Once the No. 3 leader of the House Republican Conference, Cheney was booted from her role and later lost her seat after bucking her party to take a stand against former President Donald Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.
Cheney overwhelmingly alienated members after refusing to tamper her criticisms of the former president in the weeks and months following the insurrection unlike the then-leader of the caucus, Kevin McCarthy, who quickly returned to Trumps side after initially condemning him for his role in the riot. Cheney became the top Republican on the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack. In 2022, she lost in the primary for her Wyoming seat.

(26,464 posts)On the contrary, he shares her belief that the party has been hijacked. Dick's a traditional conservative in a lot of ways, and he's none too pleased to see the Trumpification of the GOP.
Example: "In our nations 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump, the former vice president says in the 60-second spot released Thursday. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him."
He is a coward. A real man wouldnt lie to his supporters. He lost his election and he lost big. I know it, he knows it and, deep down, I think most Republicans know it, Cheney says.

(67,105 posts)As corrosive, cynical, and unstatesmanlike as Dickhead was, Trump was worse.
I thought his dinner theater with the wheelchair in order not to have to stand up during Obamas inauguration was the depth of political douchebaggery.
Trump left him in the dust.

(13,492 posts)She agrees with 99% of Trump's policies but she's upset because her people are gone to the trash bin of history.
Make no mistake, if Jeb! had won in 2016 and pulled the J6 bullshit, Liz Cheney would have been on the steps of the Capitol holding a "Stop the Steal" banner...
Fuck Liz Cheney and fuck Trump for making people on MY SIDE salivate and drool over Liz Cheney who is a loathsome and despicable scumbag.

Cheney's policies are abhorrent to me, but she has demonstrated her support for democracy and the rule of law.

(13,492 posts)Liz Cheney has shown ONLY opposition to Trump.
I have ZERO confidence as to her loyalty to Democracy if the perpetrator was anyone other than Trump.
The anger of Liz Cheney is 100% anti-Trumpism.
NOTHING more.
And like I said... she supports 99% of Trump actions and policies.
Just LOOK at her voting record.

(22,987 posts)What other Republicans have stood up against Trump? When one crosses Trump he/she is going to get death threats.
I had a taste of speaking truth to power 50 years ago when I was on my small town's borough council protecting our pristine watershed. I got death threats in my small town and I spent many sleepless nights.
Walk a mile in Liz Cheney's shoes before you condemn her. As you say, her party, the Republican party is dead and she is one of the most outspoken critics of Trump and the Magat party.
I bet Trump cracks a smile when people condemn Liz.

(13,492 posts)You and I agree with Liz Cheney on precisely ONE political topic.
Trump.
Liz Cheney agrees with Trump on 99% of policies.
But OUR reasons are different than Liz's reason.
IMHO... Liz has no allegiance to Democracy. She'd be quite happy with an Authoritarian GOP as long as "her folks" were running it.
Liz Cheney... and Bill Kristol... and Rick Wilson... and Steve Schmidt... hate Trump for different reasons than you and I.
They oppose Trump because he destroyed 50+ YEARS worth of work.
This is all about the death of neoconservatism.
This might bore most of my friends here... but it's a great read.
The Brookings Institution held a discussion panel with Bill Kristol, EJ Dionne Jr and others in 2010 talking about the origins and evolution of neoconservatism and the power it held in American politics.
Understand neoconservatism and it's major players, including the Bush and Cheney families and you'll understand why they all HATE Trump today.

(18,335 posts)The DNC should be asking all the big name Republican never Тяцмpers to make TV ads educating
the public why Democracy can not afford their preferred party this election cycle coming up.
On with Nichole Wallace on Tuesday.
They will have good questions, I trust.
I'm especially interested in seeing the conversation between Liz and Rachel when they get to the part where they both agree on a few points. That should be interesting and powerful.

(44,771 posts)Old time Republicans - Main Street, pro-business - are doing well under Joe Biden. The economy is humming, productivity is up, jobs are good, and profits are fat. Only beef is with Democratic social issues, and I think some are becoming convinced that ship sailed. At least she has principles, many of which I don't agree with, but most Republicans don't have any.

(12,940 posts)Every single time the GOP won big in the 20th century was after an economic recovery or uptick spurred on by Democrats. Then they run that economy into the ground while gutting the government and scooping up pretty much every spare nickel they can suck from lower and middle class taxpayers, all while banking their tax breaks.
The Cheneys need the Democrats to stabilize the US economy.

(3,571 posts)No, no, no. Its the Repug party, and all those who support that orange monster who have alienated THEMSELVES from civil, polite society. To say you have alienated others by speaking the truth implies some fault to the truth speaker. It would be like saying youve alienated yourself from Ted Bundy by telling him murdering women is abhorrent behaviour.

(10,445 posts)I cannot stand Dick Cheney, both on a personal and political level (I knew him just enough at UW when he was a grad student), but he IS an old style conservative and NOT any kind of MAGAt by any means, and neither is Liz. She did urge everyone to vote Democratic last night on Rachel's show, unless I was hearing wrong. So, I give him a (grudging) break, and so should you. You can hate him on another day.
