Do not laugh, I beg of you do not laugh!

I'm a pretty strong feminist, let me preface this story with that fact!

I have been having quite a bit of a hard time in thinking I may lose my beloved Wonder Bread, you know with Hostess closing and all.

Well, hubby went grocery shopping today and the stores were picked clean of Wonder Bread, Twinkies, Donettes, everything Hostess.. Holy Cow!

He went out to another store to see if he could find a loaf of Wonder Bread, and a couple of other things we needed!!!!! And I told him, try to find a replacement if you can't find the Wonder Bread.

Now, I'm really beginning to get really concerned I may have consumed my last slice of Wonder Bread! I know I can't find Sunbeam around here anymore. They closed a bakery down in 2007, and that is the closest thing to Wonder Bread, imho.

I'm sorry to have been bothering you all with my fear over this loss, but I really have been fretting about the loss of this bread. I know, please don't tell me how bad it is for me. I don't care. I like the bread and have been bred on Wonder Bread! Grilled cheese sandwiches will not be the same without my favorite Wonder Bread!

So anyhow, hubby gets home from the grocery store and is all proud. He says the second store was out of Wonder Bread too, and all other hostess products. People must be stock piling the stuff. But anyhow, he whips out this loaf of bread:

I'm gonna give it a try, because I don't have another choice, but DAYUM! Did they have to name it BIMBO!?

that makes your teeth squeak, Bimbo bread is great stuff.

It's made by a Mexican company, Grupo Bimbo, that also owns Sara Lee and Entemann's, the latter making dense cake donuts that will make you wonder what you ever saw in those bland Hostess things.

The irony here is that Grupo Bimbo has been trying to buy Hostess for years and has been rebuffed. Now that the company is picked clean of all but its name and recipes and the CEO has looted the last few scraps, they might be able to do it if they're willing to take on that much debt.

All the panicky people out there needn't worry too much, a national brand like Hostess is likely not going away for long. If the company manages to stay out of the greedy hands of bankers and hedge funds and big holding companies, it will probably outlive us all.

I can't find their chocolate devil's food crumb donuts anywhere. Those were the best donuts outside of the independent bakeries. I'm betting their parent company buys out Hostess, too. And, I hope after doing so, they go back to the original recipes. I hear that Hostess products have deteriorated over the years.

Also Thomas' English Muffins.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grupo_Bimbo

The name "Bimbo" has no specific meaning in Spanish; thus, the name has not caused significant uproar as it would in the United States, where the word "bimbo" has a negative connotation. The official theory believes that the name Bimbo, coined in 1945 when the company was rebranded from its previous name, Super Pan S.A., is the mixing of the words "bingo" and "Bambi".[5] In addition, the innocent, childlike name went well with the brand image they wanted to build.

In Mexico as in some Latin American countries, it is common to refer to any bread brand as "pan bimbo" (bimbo bread) instead of the proper "pan de barra" (loaf of bread). The name "Bimbo" has almost become a synonym for bread.

70. The whole idea of brands is to develop product identies that are independent from the corporation
Sun Nov 18, 2012, 07:23 PM
Nov 2012

And the main asset that they would buy from Hostess is the value of the brands, like Wonder or Twinkie, that they would continue to use when selling those typed of goods. The products might no longer be made in the existing bakeries, but the Grupo Bimbo USA bakeries might bake the products instead and they might be distributed through Grupo Bimbo USA delivery routes. There may not be much value in the old Hostess bakeries, since it is likely that they have been run without much investment or maintenance.

Sun Nov 18, 2012, 06:11 PM
Nov 2012

I havent eaten bread in 10 years. I think it has too much gluten which is a kind of glue. Bread is basically empy calories too. I'd rather eat something with more nutrition. I occasionally eat bread though but I will throw one bun away and make it an open face sandwich if its a hamburger or whatever.

Its a lot higher in gluten than when man first started eating it 10,000 years ago. They keep breeding more and more into it. I wonder if thats why the Jews made leavened bread forbidden. As the article alludes, I've had an easier time of maintaining my ideal weight by staying away from bread(s) , cookies and crackers for the past 10 years.

Sun Nov 18, 2012, 06:23 PM
Nov 2012

Like other plant proteins, the digestive system breaks it down into the constituent amino acids, which are then available for tissue building and repair or for use as a source of energy if they are in excess of requirements.

Of course, you should get a variety of proteins from multiple sources in a balanced diet. Bread and water is not a balanced diet.

and used a solar oven for it in hot desert summers. I loved baking and I loved my homemade bread.

That's past tense because I've developed a nasty allergy to wheat and haven't gotten the chemistry down well enough to bake gluten free breads. Someday... I've already discovered that the rice-potato-tapioca blend has the most wheatlike flavor.

One of these days I'm going to try some farro, see if the problem is the modern wheat strain with both gluten and gliadin in large amounts. I suspect that's the case.

Although Quentin Tarantino is known for never using real brands for products like cereals and cigarettes, the brand of the bread he uses to make the sandwich during the "Emilio's killing story" scene, BIMBO, is a real and very popular brand of bread in Mexico.

a one horse store that only had Wonder "bread", I beg of you.
If you have a nearby Safeway and that Safway has a bakery. Or for that matter if any of the nearby Safeways have bakery.
Go to the fresh bread section. Pick up a loaf of Italian or Sour Dough.
You'll see the difference between bread and Wonder "solidified chemtrail in a bag".
If you have a nearby KingSupers and that KingSupers has a bakery. Or for that matter if any of the nearby KingSupers have bakery.
Go to the fresh bread section. Pick up a loaf of Rye. The dark Rye is especially good.
Heck even the raccoons wouldn't mess with that Wonder "solidified chemtrail in a bag".

Price is reasonably the same, however the bread won't stay fresh as long.
On the up side, it doesn't taste like "solidified chemtrail in a bag".

Please note I do feel bad for the workers. I hope they find jobs in a bakery that cares about the product.
It might even be such that said bakery cares about it's employees

68. I've been to Mexico twice and have used Bimbo twice to my great personal amusement
Sun Nov 18, 2012, 07:20 PM
Nov 2012

First time was in high school, and I was part of a student exchange where students from Puebla, Mexico, stayed with our families for 2 weeks, and we went down from Kansas and stayed with their families. I was the only guy on the trip either way. After flying into Mexico City and getting in a school van to go to Puebla, I immediately saw a Bimbo delivery truck and turned to one of my schoolmates and said, "You are the biggest piece of bread I know!" This of course confused her until I pointed out the truck, and she laughed. It soon became a private joke that spread throughout the group except to the person on the trip who found something to complain about everywhere we went. At the end of our two weeks there, she was going crazy, whining, "Whyyyyyyyy do you keep calling me a piece of breeeeee-eeeeead?"

Second time was in college to take a class for a major in Spanish. That bear is pretty ubiquitous in Mexico, and little signs with the bear saying, "Aqui Hay Bimbo," are found outside large supermarkets as well as little corner stores (Here there is Bimbo). I had three of the girls on the trip that I became good friends with pose next to a sign on a corner store, telling them I wanted a shot of them with the picturesque background. My professor walked by when I was taking it and just smiled at me, knowing my true target.

Sun Nov 18, 2012, 07:47 PM
Nov 2012

Bimbo has been around a long time, didn't know it was imported or baked here though. I suppose I should have guessed - the local independent grocers now have so many Mexican customers I can get anything I used to get across the line here now. Kind of makes me almost as sad as seeing walmarts there.

along with all the other cultural destruction, white bread and mayo has ruined a lot of Mexican food tradition

edit for speeling and personal note: when responding from the latest page, note how many replies are already posted and maybe READ some of them!

IIRC, it's a Mexican company. Someone is bound to buy Hostess, and the products will be made once again.

Right now, Twinkies and other Hostess products are selling for ridiculous prices on eBay. Somehow, I think people will regret those purchases, once these items are available again.

That's gonna suck big time. No more Hotdogs and Hamburgers until I can find decent hot dog buns and hamburger buns. I can use Bunny Bread for sliced bread, but it will never be as good as Merita was.

And all this time, I was thinking my brands were safe. When you mentioned Wonder Bread, I went and checked and no more Merita. Now it hurts.

I'm probably the only one who didn't laugh about the Bimbo Bread. No more Merita. You didn't tell us not to They made the best of the best hamburger buns and hot dog buns. Will miss those a lot.
