(1,518 posts)Our house is 500 yards from the ocean. Our neighbor's roof, at the top of the inverted "V", seems to attract Seagulls. They then swoop down to our backyard, hang out for a while, take a white poop, then leave. There have been times when I've gone out to chase them away, which doesn't always end well. More than once, they've crashed into the glass partitions at the end of our pool deck, which makes them upchuck. Seafood, I presume. A disgusting mess to clean up. And for those concerned, they fly away, apparently unharmed, just presumably hungry.
We also have a small window on a top-floor room, which is right above the roof. They like to peck on this, usually around 6:00 AM.
In conclusion, I don't like them. The problem being, in CA If you think you can take the gulls into your own hands, think again. They are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This is a federal law that requires a permit from Fish and Wildlife in order to harass or touch the adults, eggs, nests, or young chicks. While you are allowed to alter your roof to discourage nesting before the start of the breeding season, be sure to avoid disturbing the nests, eggs, and chicks during breeding season (which in La Jolla, seems to be May-September). Basically whenever you see a young gray chick, its off limits.

(4,741 posts)Yes, some people out there are that stupid. In fact, the number of very stupid people is quite high.
Where did you ever get the idea that people couldn't be this stupid? Have you never been in public?
See: MAGAts. Tens of millions of them--and they're all as dumb or dumber than this guy. They're everywhere, and, most frightening of all, they breed.

(1,437 posts)If the OP has a hard time spelling Vivek Ramaswamy's last name correctly because it is long and has a lot of letters (I do too--I'm not the best speller), then look it up on Google before posting. But how would any of us feel if someone started a post about Kamala Harris and called her "Whateverthefuckhernameis" Harris the Vice President? Of course that would be seen as a racist microaggression, and rightly so.

(10,376 posts)I grew up with a Polish surname. That was fine as long as I was in the ethnic enclave where I lived, but when it came to dealing with the larger world I got the impression that a lot of people felt OK pronouncing and spelling the name any way they felt like. (Don't get me started on how the media pronounce Protosiewicz - Polish has phonetic spelling, it just doesn't use the same scheme English does)
"Ramaswamy" is not a difficult name for English speakers - or it shouldn't be if one takes the time to break it into syllables. Now he seems to be working on earning the nickname "ramasmary", but IMHO that's his own behavior.

(10,376 posts)taught me: start at the last syllable, then add syllables until you're comfortable saying the whole word.
Eg:
-my
-swamy
-maswamy
-Ramaswamy
