(36,334 posts)"How can we use this approaching asteroid to get tax cuts for the wealthy?"
You missed the point.

(23,585 posts)happen to the Economy, when massive amounts of money are made available to the average person, and NOT the 1%ers (give 0% to them, they already rec'd plenty over the years) as these give-away republican policies seemed to have been (especially with the tRUMP giveaways), where they wouldn't release the names of those who rec'd the funds until six months later...what were they hiding?
The 2017 tax cuts and giveaways under tRUMP went mostly to the 1% and guess who's paying for it?
We are, now that provisions of this disgusting one-sided 2017 tax cut bill have gotten to the point that our meager tax cuts are going away and we're going to paying the bill for this ill-derived tax cut.

(13,236 posts)Honestly, if "tax cuts for the wealthy" is Republicans' answer for everything, then it is an answer for nothing.

(82,849 posts)Why not cut out the middle man, and just let workers keep more of their earnings, and tax the wealthy to make up for it? I mean, if putting more money into the pockets of the poorer folks is really the goal of tax cuts.

(13,236 posts)... then how do we have people living in poverty at all anymore after the Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy and the Trump Tax Cuts for the Wealthy? Heck, the Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy precipitated the Great Recession; how could that have even been possible given the magical properties that Republicans claim "welfare for the rich" is supposed to have?

(1,395 posts)The Republicans took over control of Congress after the 2010 midterms. The bill Nancy Pelosi put forward and Obama's stated position was to extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone except people earning over 250K/year. And, of course the newly Republican Congress was unwilling to make that deal and insisted that the Bush tax cuts be renewed for those making over 250K as well.
IMO that was one of the biggest missed opportunities of the Obama years. The Bush tax cats were due to expire for everyone and when the Republican Congress was unwilling to agree to extend them for everyone except those earning >250K, Obama should have called their bluff and let them expire for everyone. The problem was that he didn't want to jeopardize the recovery from the 2008 crash.
But, it would have been politically far better to let everyone's tax cuts expire and have it be the fault of the Republicans who were unwilling to extend them unless millionaires/billionaires were included too. He could have neutered the Republican Congress on day one.
But, contrary to your post, it was ultimately Obama who DID end the Bush tax cuts for the top brackets. If you weren't someone who posts in here a lot, I would think that you were trolling.

(14,315 posts)But if you really want to debate it the threshold was not 250K, it was 400/450K.
Obama agreed to make 82% of the Bush Tax Cuts permanent.
If I were a Repubican troll, don't you think I'd be applauding this accomplishment?
