(43,235 posts)You have to sign in via an Instagram account.
Now, I have an IG account--it's basically just a burner account though that I use for desktop. I don't use IG on my phone.
So I put in my IG account and password but it still wants me to go to my phone to set up an account.
I guess I'm an old fart but the only social media I have on my phone is Facebook. And I don't want to link my Threads to my Facebook. (Facebook is for people I know, and Twitter--for now--is for people that I don't know.)
I just want to:
1. Go to a Browser
2. Put in my Threads login and password
3. Immediately go to Threads
That's what I've done for Twitter (never used the app). Why can't I do it for Threads?

(10,123 posts)Right now, I don't see any way to use Threads without installing its app on your phone and logging in there first. If anyone knows of a way to use Threads without putting its app on my phone, please me know!

(10,123 posts)Threads could just let you log in with your Instagram account and be done with it. The fact it's forcing you to download an app to your phone first makes me very wary.

(43,235 posts)I don't want to have the app.
I didn't have one for Twitter, don't want one for Threads.
I just want to sign on and go directly to Threads.

(10,040 posts)One article I read (can't find it right now) said that Musk's product companies were successful because they were constrained by the laws of physics.
Whereas, there are no laws of physics for social media. The only law is "throw shit against a wall and see what sticks".
And that's what he's doing. Without theory or prior experience or knowledge base, he's trying everything, including breaking labor laws and stiffing employees and vendors (but that's another matter, based on hubris versus logic and law)
It's entirely reckless, because unlike a traditional startup, which he fancies twixler to be, he had plenty to lose, and has lost billions of dollars and all credibility except with the fascist contingent.
It must be the reality distortion field that magnifies the opinions of a minority, especially that minority of one, into something the size of the universe. Unconstrained by the laws of physics.
Or anything else.

(15,096 posts)The app was designed for a phoneon my tablet it offers a narrow view down the center of the screen and Im forever accidentally clicking on stuff when Im just trying to scroll. Ive found some of the accounts I was following on Twitter, but by no means all. Im not sure I can give up all the British gardeners I follow on the site formerly known as Twitter.

(16,688 posts)I haven't even tried to look at threads yet, but I don't like the sound of that. I do most of my online stuff on my tablet, in landscape mode. I'll use the phone when I'm away from home, and there's no wifi, but mostly for reading articles, because the screen is too tiny for my aging eyes to use for much else. I don't even use DU on my phone unless I absolutely HAVE to, because I hate the way it looks on there.
I'll probably break down and check it out Threads sometime for curiosity's sake, but right now, the curiosity isn't strong enough. X sucks, but I was never all that into Twitter, so I haven't felt the need to look for something to replace it.

(8,910 posts)Orwell had it mostly right in 1984. The part he screwed up was that it wasn't the government you had to worry about as much as it was the Fascist Corporations as the true enemy of the population.........
If you doubt that for a minute consider this FACT:
95+% of all news media in the United States, print, TV, Radio, Cable is owned and operated by Uber Rich Republicans........
AND also, the "Fairness Doctrine" was thrown out during the Reagan occupation of the White House.......
THE most ludicrous media statement of all time is Fox New's: "FAIR and BALANCED"........

I used to love William Rivers Pitt before he passed................I wish I could find the long article he wrote about 9/11 it was incredible pointing directly at the fact that the W administration (Cheney/Rumsfeld/ etc) had allowed it to happen. And how it was even in their PNAC papers.........Clinton and Gore had warned them and even did the research about which airport had the worst security: Logan International........
The U.S. Citizens weren't listening then, and they are not listening now............

(101,428 posts)To me, when something blows up, it's a disaster.
One annoying thing about it (in a PC browser, anyway) I just found is that videos have only one control on them - mute/unmute. No pause, or go back to the beginning, let alone scroll to a specific point (or an indication of how long the video is, or where you are in it). This means, with the video starting muted (which is a fair choice, if you have the ability to restart), you miss the first few seconds of sound, while you remember, and get the mouse over the unmute button. And then have to watch the whole thing through and start again, if you want to check if you missed something.
It seems a very poor way of presenting a video. I mean, cassettes had more functionality, and they're over half a century old.
