Welker pressed, "Just to be clear, were you listening to your lawyers advice, or were you listening to your own instincts? to which the former president replied, "Oh, sure. It was my decision. I listened to some people. Some people said that."
----
After watching the clip, a smiling Psaki commented, "So, this is interesting, because they've been using this advice of counsel arguments. So, what did you think about that exchange?"
An equally smiling Katyal replied, "S o, Jen, anyone who is any critic of Kristen Welker on 'Meet The Press' who's like, 'Oh, she's not making news,' she just made huge news this morning."
"Because Donald Trump's defense to January 6th has been one basic thing, which, is I relied on the advice of my lawyers, I didn't have bad criminal intent, it is my lawyers who were telling me to do this," he explained. "And she got him through a masterful interviewing, and playing to his ego, to go, ''Oh no, I did all myself.'"

Interesting how far you can get simply by calling that narcissistic idiot "Mr. President."

(58,785 posts)My husband and I noticed this, but I didn't get excited because I guessed he might have already said it in different ways. He's such a blabbermouth.
Whether this nails him, or helps nail him, though, good job!

Haven't turned on any cable discussion today, but first time or tenth over months, can't be good. Poor attorneys.

(13,212 posts)No, it wasn't important, but I'll agree it's probably big news. I'm no lawyer, but I think he covered his tracks on that one exceptionally well while still coming off as the lead decision maker.
The worst part of the interview for Trump was when Welker asked him what he was doing on January 6th, and he literally told her he wasn't telling her anything. There she had him flustered.
Trump was exceptionally strong in much of the rest of the interview. Lying constantly, bragging about how great the world was with him as president, selling, of course, but strong. Unfortunately, Trump does understand TV.

(2,279 posts)..talking to the 'base'. But I'm wondering if he's also trying to establish a hint of 'intent' defense. He said he thought he won the election and continues to say it.
I remember hearing legal pundits talking about "truly believing you didn't commit a crime" could be a defense...but there's also the large number of authoritative sources who told him he lost the election and therefore, couldn't use his instinct as a defense.
But Smith hasn't charged him with specifically inciting the insurrection so intent may be irrelevant.

I went through the entire interview; Trump was large and in charge. Repeated everything he's been saying since losing the election.
I want to see somebody pin him down on one single topic; the un-stolen election or the Presidential Records Act or Hunter Biden or whatever, to the point he gets mad and walks off the set.

(6,874 posts)but if she keeps doing things like this, I might have to start watching again.
From what it appears, she was like Gayle King interviewing R. Kelly those years ago.
When he [R. Kelly] began 'going off the rails' and yelling and screaming, punching at the wind, she calmly just said "Robert. Robert. Sit down, please, Robert. Let's continue." In her "mom" voice, like she was getting an unruly whiny kid to sit back down and eat his peas.
Could be that Ms. Welker was doing something like that with Dumpy the Clown. Massaging his ego to
the point he easily admitted guilt, and undercut his own and may of his fellow defendants' arguments.
