General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf I didn't know better, I'd think that Trump is gearing up for an insanity defense.
I'm kind of torn on this.
The stuff he has been saying, especially the last few days...
Any rational person would think he is either insane or in the throes of dementia.
Maybe his lawyers told him that's his only way out?
However, I don't think Trump is so far gone yet that his ego would accept this scenario.

(7,874 posts)the hovering specter of golem Jack Smith has Trump raging...he can't fathom why his decades long weapons of annihilation (threats/intimidation/personal insults) are not bringing prosecutors/judges to their knees...accountability is a bitch and it's driving him to distraction...

(35,390 posts)Don't see that he likes inflicting pain, more like he's oafishly oblivious to others' pain.
If he wanted to *inflict* pain, then he's obviously incompetent at the whole "sadistic" thing.

(7,874 posts)a person who is manipulative, dishonest, narcissistic, borderline sadistic, remorseless, controlling, apathetic, amoral, promiscuous..a pathological liar...Donald J. Trump..

(28,364 posts)There more to pain than physical pain.
He lashes out at people causing them tremendous pain. Look at what he did to those two women in Georgia -- they are still suffering - scared to death, i would be, too..
This just one example of his enjoyment, or at least his "I don't give a shit".
I'd offer more examples, but I don't feel well and can't think straight.

(4,574 posts)"When someone hits me, I hit back 10 times harder"?
Sounds like me he gets at least some satisfaction in inflicting pain and suffering.

I just don't think he would want to end on that note. It would mean no potus, multiple trials, and years of psych battles.

(19,569 posts)I admit I knocked the concept around, too. Is he smart enough to play the demented old man so well, though?
It could just be the stress is getting to him and he can't concentrate. The Obama flub appears as if Obama popped into his brain and he went off into his fantasy land where beating Hillary was actually a defeat against Obama, his true nemesis.
The rest, other than the WWII screwup, are just the usual lunacy he feeds his ignorant base.

I'm sure they are telling him to STFU, and he ignores them.

Copping an insanity defense is not good political strategy. Who wants an insane POTUS?

(17,472 posts)it will keep him out of prison.
He doesn't care about being president. He cares about keeping his ass out of prison.
As far as state charges that can't be pardoned, he probably figures he'll cross that bridge when he comes to it.

(58,785 posts)Remember his occasional extreme reactions to problems that arose, like the public reaction to his insulting the gold star family ? He'd disappear for a few days while he presumably got reglued together.
There was speculation they were clinical narcissistic rages, and for some while I hoped for a more profound decompensation he wouldn't come back from in time. Never happened, then or through all the extreme stresses since.
Now that I mention it, though, I can still hope. Maybe as our institutional protections continue to erode and then finally destroy his own...

(17,472 posts)I'm almost 65. I don't look it. Everyone says I look early 50's. I have an older sibling who is the same way. She's in her late 70's, and she's always looked 25 years younger.
Then, all of a sudden, within a month or so, she finally looked her age. The transformation seemed to happen overnight.
Same with Trump. When I viewed his antics this week, he looked to me like he has aged 10 years in the past month.
