Rep. DesJarlais divorce records confirm affairs, his support of abortions
By Alicia M. Cohn - 11/15/12 02:40 PM ET
Records released Thursday from Rep. Scott DesJarlais's (R-Tenn.) 2001 divorce appear to confirm previous reports that DesJarlais had sexual relationships with patients while a practicing physician in Tennessee.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press obtained the documents, which reveal that DesJarlais, who opposes abortion rights, supported his ex-wife in obtaining two abortions before their marriage.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press also reports that the transcripts from the divorce trial provide a record of sexual relationships DesJarlais had with at least two patients, three coworkers and a drug representative during the time he was chief of staff at Grandview Medical Center in Jasper, Tenn.
The Tennessee Democratic Party had asked a county judge to unseal records from DesJarlais's divorce, but the judge delayed the release until after Election Day.
DesJarlais won reelection last week despite a report, based on audio of a phone call released last month, that in September 2000 he had encouraged his mistress to get an abortion.

If I lived in that district I'd be calling for the JUDGE to be removed from office since he kept secret essential information that would have allowed the voters to make an informed choice.

(90,683 posts)Back when abortion was illegal and punishable, but it was understood that a man with the right connections could certainly obtain one for his wife or mistress. And of course if he didn't have connections or didn't want to get involved that way, he could just spurn the woman for getting herself pregnant and let her bear the consequences.
Yeah sure. The good old days of hypocrisy and women who knew their place.

(84 posts)During Alesia Butler's labor and delivery, she was monitored primarily by Dr. Scott Desjarlais. Shortly after birth, her newborn daughter Amanda Butler was transferred to a newborn intensive care nursery. Amanda was having trouble breathing and had poor muscle tone. After her birth, she had a severe form of cerebral palsy. She is moderately retarded. She has little or no functional ambulation due to the fact that at least three of her limbs are impaired. She has also exhibited behavioral problems. Amanda Butler will never be capable of living independently.
So lets just say that, if the Tea Party looked closely, it might find Dr. Desjarlais less than perfect on the abortion issue. Desjarlais makes up for any abortion peccadillos in spades by getting an A plus plus plus on tort reform. A man like Desjarlais understands how badly a man like Desjarlais needs to be protected from people like Amanda Butler.
