At an event in Jacksonville, Florida, a Black man complained to DeSantis about his policies. The man pointed to a recent race-based shooting in the city.
"Well, listen, excuse me, I'm not gonna let you accuse me of committing criminal activity," DeSantis interrupted. "I am not going to take that! I am not going to take that! You should want to have a civil conversation."
"Everyone doesn't have their own truth," the governor snapped. "No, you don't get to come here and blame me for some madman. That is not appropriate, and I'm not going to accept it."
"You have allowed people to hunt people like me," the constituent said as two white staffers urged the man to leave.

(47,143 posts)I figured he was Trump but smarter. Its been fun to watch his campaign crash and burn

(11,767 posts)I thought that he would be able to do horrible things because he seemed more put together than Trump who is impulsive and self absorbed, and frankly, kind of dumb.
As I saw more of DeSantis and learned more about Florida politics, I started to change my tune. I went so far as to predict that once America saw more of him, that he would fail and would not become the president. I said that he'd likely never be more than the former governor of Florida, although that may be premature. He may have a shot at becoming a Senator from Florida, just because again, the politics in Florida are whacked.
DeSantis is academically and likely intellectually smarter than Trump, but he lacks any of the ability that Trump, or other politicians have in actually relating to people. Trump is a sociopath in my opinion, but he still retains the ability that a con-man has in identifying and winning the confidence of his marks. DeSantis is just awkward and horrible at the basic skills of relating to people. He is also arrogant and falsely entitled.
A few months ago there was a story that came out about DeSantis which sums him up pretty well. I don't know if the story is true or not, but a person who claimed to be a friend or room mate said that DeSantis, when he would go out on dates, would purposely say the word Thai (yes as in the Country and People of Thailand) incorrectly. He would pronounce it Thigh as in, "I like Thigh food" The story went on to say that if the woman who was out on the date corrected DeSantis, he would then "ghost her" and cease communications. So, basically if you didn't fall for his gaslighting and surrender your will to him, he would want nothing to do with you. He didn't con you or smooth talk you, or even try to trick you in any way. He just expected you to agree with him straight up. It is both arrogant and stupid. No wonder his campaign is crashing and burning.
I too am enjoying the situation.

(5,410 posts)and it has been downhill ever since.... including his polls...
The more people get to know him, the less they like him-- even among Republicans...
His whole boomlet came from his opposition to anti-Covid policies--- which only a small minority of the country agreed with...
Now that there are no mask mandates etc, there is no rationale for his candidacy.

(11,767 posts)I see it this way, if he were not in the position he is in as governor, how might that conversation have gone?
When you have the authority of the State of Florida behind you, with bodyguards in a highly curated event, and your response to antagonism is to get all huffy, that is not masterful communications.
I do think that DeSantis knows what Conservatives want to see. They want people to yell and deny things rather than to actually have the conversation that he was decrying. DeSantis would NEVER sit down with that guy and talk about the situation and why the guy thinks DeSantis is responsible. NEVER in a million years would he do that. That guy had to go into hostile territory for a chance to confront DeSantis. All of the advantages were on DeSantis' side.
I see masterful communications as what President Obama would do with critics. He would engage them, while keeping them at elbow's length, let them feel heard, while seeming like the reasonable person. As much as it pains me to say it, I see masterful communications as what Ronald Reagan used to do as well. Self deprecating humor to disarm people, partially answering the question, and then playing things off as if he had not heard the question.
DeSantis has ZERO people skills, which is why his campaign is imploding. He is too arrogant to learn anything too, I actually don't see much of a future for him outside of Florida politics. I said on another post in this thread, that he still has a shot at becoming Senator from Florida because Florida politics are crazy, but he won't be president, not in 2024, 2028, or any time.

(11,767 posts)People say that the Civil War was fought over slavery, and yes, it was...
It was not however, fought to destroy White Supremacy as both North and South gave indications that while slavery was abominable, that Black people were not the equal of White people.
You can see in the way that the Indigenous people were treated after the Civil War, as savages, once just a step below the "White Man", then denigrated to below the status of the Black man when their land was desired. When we wanted to colonize the Philippines we painted (literally) Filipinos with feathers in their hair or in African garb because they were "not White".
The Civil Rights movement made advances in the legal rights of Black people and other minorities, but again, it was never aimed at confronting the roots of White Supremacy, just the most serious effects.
What conservatives are doing now, with the backlash against an honest teaching of American History with many Liberals unfortunately just kind of staying quiet, is also a testament to the staying power of the idea of White Supremacy and people not wanting to upset the applecart.
