Chris Christie on Morning Joe just now.
I wanna know how.
Even if Clarence Thomas retires (or dies) before Jan. 2030, that's it. We're still stuck with a 5-4 split and not in our favor. Alito's good for the next presidential term. So's Roberts. Trump selected Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Comey-Barrett to sit for decades.
A packed U.S. Supreme Court? In my dreams . . . . .

(4,176 posts)Or, some 'accidental' situation. Hope springs eternal for a return to an actual liberal SCOTUS.

(617 posts)So, fuck them.
It's time to repair the court and be done with it.
They are going to threaten "Second Amendment Remedies" anyway.
I don't see where expanding the court has any kind of downside.
We have had 9 Justice's since 1869 when our population was only about 40 million people.
It's time to give the court the additional resources, and integrity, that it will need to handle the challenging times ahead.

(10,551 posts)Start with term limits, probably legal if termed-out judges are rotated to lesser courts or assigned as senior judges who fill in when others must recuse themselves. They still have lifetime appointments, just not as active judges. I think many would choose to leave instead of sitting around with few cases, which would be good.
Then evaluate the work loads for all circuits and the total population covered by each circuit. I think wed find that population growth has shifted to the South, with those circuits now covering more people. Then re-group the states within each circuit for a better population balance. We would also have a better ideological balance if circuits were made up of states from north to south rather than all south or all north. Next, add four new justices to the Supreme Court to have the Court with one justice for each of the circuits.
And last, but certainly not least, establish ethics rules with clear punishments for violations, including declaring any free trips or other largesse from donors deemed as acceptable as income on which justices must pay taxes.
Our courts are currently a mess, including the SC. But f course we can do nothing without a good majority in Congress and a willing president. Lets hope 2024 gives us that.

(4,558 posts)A major issue I have with our current system of justice is the ridiculously long time it takes to get cases thru the system.
Fair and speedy trial? What a joke! Justice should not take years and years. For either the defendant or the plaintiff/state.
We the people should not have to wait years and years to see justice when people break the law. Especially when it means deciding if a defendant is contemplating/running for office.
We have just learned to accept the normal round of appeals that extend court cases to obscenely long time frames. Cases against drug companies or tobacco companies or other nefarious entities that see plaintiffs die or go bankrupt while waiting for justice. Its baked in to our justice system.
And its wrong.

(18,188 posts)so should the Supremes. It only make sense. And while we're at it, increase the size of the House. Our population has more than tripled since 1913 and yet we're stuck at 435 House seats that were never meant to have such large constituencies. There's 736 members of the German Bundestag, 620 MPs in the UK, yet we're stuck at 435 with 3 and 5 times their population respectively.. Time to change that.

(11,436 posts)That's not the same thing as the "Liberal" channel. They've got a nice stable of neocon pundits they can rely on to trash P01135809, then in the same breath bash the Biden administration.

But I dont think Biden would support that.
But, I do think President Whitmer would in 2028

(15,637 posts)Sadly, even with a Biden win and managing to keep control of the Senate, I don't think we'll have enough Democrats with the desire or the guts to expand the court, AS WE SHOULD.
