General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat else can the Republicans do to protect the criminal Defendant ex-president?
Most have been silent. That has helped the Defendant a lot.
Many in the House are threatening to impeach Joe Biden.
Some are calling for the de-funding of the Special Counsel and the DOJ and many are calling for the firing of Merrick Garland and Christopher Wray.
Georgia has passed a law with the sole intent of firing the Fulton County DA, Fani Willis.
They are revenge-motivated. Some have even called to bring back hanging as the answer to their "political problem".
Some of the more loyal Republican Committee Chairs are attempting to subpoena the documents of local and state officials that relate to the Defendant's prosecution.
They are doing everything they can for the criminal Defendant, short of laying their heads on the railroad tracks.

(3,943 posts)I just passed two years here at DU. A great bunch. As a fellow former Republican I certainly do not regret leaving the party. The party left me long before.

(50,290 posts)So far the traitorous members of congress have not been touched.
I think the message from the GOP is that if you start arresting MOC we
will rain hell on the Dems, DOJ, FBI, state prosecutors.

Was Loudermilk even interviewed by the FBI when he gave the insurrectionists a tour of the Capitol?

(50,290 posts)And what about Cruz, Hawley, MTG, Gaetz, etc.
Certainly they at least knew what was going to happen and did nothing.
But I think they did take some action to help.

(3,285 posts)Instead of taking all the time to plot how to overturn the election, Trump should have been working on the plans he put in motion for the withdrawal. He should have been helping his country with coming major events he put in motion. Trump chose his ego over a smooth transition of power.

(8,009 posts)New Deal/Great Society progressive institutions is best served by ignoring Law and Order, legal and Congressional rules and precedent in favor of ideological "purity" and the personality cult of DJT.
They are not your father's Republicans nor the party of pragmatic conservatism they pretend to be. They exist to serve unfettered greed and maniacal lust for power expressed as cruelty to those least able to defend themselves, enlightened humanity in general, and utter contempt for the laws of Nature, Physics, God, and Humanity alike.
They will say and do anything, anytime, and everywhere they can to distort reality in service of their mania.
What many do not realize is the present party membership was recruited to support exactly the kinds of egomaniacal mayhem DJT embodies. From local school boards, to the statehouses and Congress the majority live and breathe the same bizarre anti-faith in common justice and the social contract. They are the product of a well financed plan to overturn democratic rule in favor of neo-religious fascism organized by ultra-wealthy individuals whose only real value is expressing their power and vanity.

(12,937 posts)1. They are delusional enough to believe the Defendant is innocent of all the felony counts for which grand juries of citizens indicted him.
2. They are willing to destroy the foundation of American democracy and rule of law for political power and to appease their voting base.
Both #1 & #2 above should disqualify anyone from holding public office.
