Back in 2005/2006, there were a few books that essentially identified the difference between Republicans and Democrats in terms of how they viewed the family. The Republicans were essentially comfortable with an authoritarian patriarchal point of view, where Democrats were more egalitarian.

Here, the description is very badly behaved little kids, where the mother seems passive with regards to controlling them and the dad obviously ineffective. Not to mention, given her history, telling a three year old where she can color ie her coloring book or paper and saying the crayons go away if she colors anywhere else seems easy.
