According to a report from the Daily Beast's Jose Pagliery, Cannon, who is currently overseeing a deeply complex and highly scrutinized federal case where former president Donald Trump is accused of obstruction of justice, made an "egregious" error where she did not give a jury an option of finding a defendant "not guilty" and now that verdict is being appealed.
As the report notes, in the case of Christopher Wilkins, she provided jurors with a verdict form that did not list "not guilty" as an option and defense lawyer Jeffrey Garland formally filed an appeal on Thursday.

As the report points out, Cannon has scant trial experience and, combined with her earlier rulings on the investigation into Trump's hoarding of documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort that were overturned by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in rough fashion, the latest episode raises more questions about her competence.
*snip*
"Last month, The New York Times discovered that Cannon has only handled four trials, collectively accounting for just 14 days in courtless than three weeks of experience before handling a potential turning point for American democracy," the Pagliery wrote. "Last week, Reuters exposed how Cannon kept family members of an accused viewer of child sex abuse locked out of her courtroom during some of his trial in June, violating his Sixth Amendment rights to have a public trialand somehow forgot to swear in the prospective jury pool, the most basic of mandatory procedures."

(12,505 posts)preside over Trump's conviction. Donald is also well aware of this fact. So he will challenge the impartiality of each and every judge. Replacing a judge takes months so expect challenges to go on until, maybe 2036or until a "Gerald Ford" gives him a pardon.

(35,884 posts)The only saving grace is that there are so many nets out there for him now that it almost doesnt make a difference.
Cannon will continue to make a fool out of herself and she and Clarence can be the laughingstock and source of continued embarrassment for the judicial system which is in need of reform. I think Whitehouses proposals are on the table for consideration. Heard this from him in a tv interview last night.

(47,822 posts)Basically, Trump will be pissed off at everyone eventually. Of course, it will never dawn on him that perhaps HE is the problem.

(1,463 posts)He's had a pink mist playbook that's gotten us to here, which is honestly astonishing. Getting to here has been no easy feat. He's yet to demonstrate a lack of preparedness for even outlier outcomes.
I won't personally lose any sleep over it tonight.
My money says Jack's got it covered.

(1,463 posts)We're on the midst of a Spanish Inquisition Y'all Qaeda Nat-C Fascist GOP style.
Cannon is an inquisitor, as are each and every one of the other fascists that are an unfortunate part of our judiciary.
They have three goals, the intimidation, incarceration and extermination of anyone or anything that dare oppose their sordid and depraved crimes against humanity.

Trumps incompetence continues to hobble our democratic system.

(4,981 posts)Yes, she is incompetent, but letting drag on just a little bit longer is ok with me, as long as DOJ makes sure she doesnt taint the case somehow. Quite a balancing act.

(25,688 posts)It reminds me of when I was treating a Philadelphia judge who was presiding over a very well-publicized murder trial, and I knew this judge for years, and he said to me something about hanging the guy high. I said judge I will pretend I didnt hear that, and he replied dont worry everybody knows I feel this way.
Great
