This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by REP (a host of the General Discussion forum).
That's been a theme here of late, and by GOSH there are plenty of links 'proving' it. I'm done trying to defend DU. It's apparent, even obvious by now that all of the Duers from Red States are universally hated on This Site.
My silly and juvenille attempts to show otherwise or request evidence to show it as being so were appropriately shut down.
I'm embarrassed.
I really am.
I should never have questioned those who claimed that DU is hostile to 'red state' Liberals and Democrats. Obviously.
As such, I suppose I'll have to really think about being here, as I have friends and family in 'red states' and am personally very much opposed to the notion that they are 'stupid' or 'foolish' for living there.
If any of you want me to leave, just say so, and I'll take it under advisement.
Thank you.

(48 posts)Come on. They can't help it if they are outnumbered. I am an ex-pat from a southern state. I was outnumbered but I have always stood firm. Good luck to all of those red state brothers and sister. Keep on fightin the good fight!

(35,015 posts)Just because us red-state DUers are 'outnumbered' doesn't mean we have to take abuse from those of our own party. Yes, I choose to live in BLUE San Antonio Texas; I have raised my children here and it's home. Dems in Texas fight hard and struggle more than Dems in blue states just because we are a minority.
We should have support but instead we're ridiculed by some. It's really discouraging sometimes.

(552 posts)You have been here too long to give in to bullies. Although I have never mentioned I am from a red state, I have been bullied and called a troll simply because I am new here. But these bullies are in the minority, and most DUers are nice people. We know who the bullies are, and they continue to show themselves up by their own behavior.

(39,370 posts)They do have a problem with deep red states, though. That sometimes carries over (or could be read as) contempt for every sentient being in those states, which is really wrong.
When it looked like the popular vote was going to be pretty tight, I think people remembered the value of all Democrats pretty quickly, if they needed to be reminded in the first place.

There is NOTHING good about South Carolina. NOTHING. The people are ALL ignorant hillbilly racists. Period. If I try to say anything else, I get attacked. I have actually stopped posting here more than once because of it.

(39,370 posts)Had he lost the primary there, it would have been over and done. Not to mention what the many brave and dedicated progressive people there have done to advance the history of this nation.
No apologies needed, IMO.

(14,337 posts)When we were in Ma. a few weeks, we saw a man standing on an overpass to the Mass. Pike HOLDING a huge Romney sign. Of course, all the Obama signs far outnumbered HIM.
By the same token, we know a man (old, white, not rich) from Alabama, now living in very red, Naples, Florida (home of Space Alien Governor), who had Obama and 99% stickers all over his car. Nope, it didn't get vandalized, but the Romney stuff were far more numerous in this place.
While it certainly is very nice to live in a majority Dem State (NY Native), all it means is is that you just have to try harder, and take no shit, as in, voter suppression.

(28,254 posts)But just for the record, I thought your earlier thread was rightfully shut down. It was beneath contempt. We Red State liberals have it rough enough without being shit on by people who are supposed to be our political allies. End of rant.....

You might be from Boston if...
You think of Philadelphia as the midwest.
You think it's your God-given right to cut someone off in traffic.
You think there are only 25 letters in the alphabet (no R's).
You think three straight days of 90+ temperatures is a heat wave.
All your pets are named after Celtics or Bruins.

(9,854 posts)and they may not hate ME, but if I say one thing about my state that isn't an apology or if I try to defend anything about it, I get steamrolled. It has happened way more than once.
And maybe thats why I dont notice it so much. But being from NH I absolutely DREAD primary time. All the 'why should those hicks from a tiny state get to choose' type threads really get to me. So I can relate.

(77,078 posts)...... is the bashing of the states themselves, or of DUers? I've seen a lot of bashing of the states, but not the DUers from those states. But then again, I tend to avoid those posts.
Besides, here's a much better representation of red/blue America.

(18,186 posts)And I note the large river of blue that courses through the Southeastern states.
I think alot of DUers are color blind, actually, because they don't appear to see it.
AS I posted elsewhere:
From 2008:
ALABAMA: 813, 479 people voted Obama; roughly TOTAL population of VERMONT
FLORIDA: 4,282,074 people voted for Obama; roughly the TOTAL population of CONNECTICUT
GEORGIA: 1,844,137 people voted for Obama; roughly the TOTAL population of NEW HAMPSHIRE

(9,854 posts)I have had a hard time of it if I ever try to defend the southeast in any way. Especially if I say anything about liking it here. If I try to make ANY positive comment about the people or my state, DUers tend to jump down my throat. I have stopped posting a couple of times because of it.
If you are being sarcastic, I have quit posting before from the attacks because I said something about how I don't like my state politically, but I do like living here. I like South Carolinians. I like the South in general. It feels like home. It isn't a perfect place by a long shot, but it's home.

(37,748 posts)I imagine there's often a very dramatic difference in questioning a thing, and the manner in which one questions a thing.
And, as evidence was indeed, offered in evidence (rather than as a 'proof')...
That being said, I do not think DUers from the south are universally hated, merely minimized and trivialized by a handful of prolific posters for no other reason than for living where they do. While I don't think that is evidence for "universal hatred", it does allow us the opportunity to see closed, dogmatic and intractable opinions that will not be swayed by evidence, often in others, and sometimes, even in ourselves.

(9,610 posts)It is not all peoples of a region. There are many progressives in red areas.
The issue, as I see it, is entrenched bigotry that has been passed through the generations. Us that understand the reasons this hatred is unfounded need to "educate" them.
We need to look at our message because it is not working currently. I do not have the answer to the delivery of a progressive message that will be accepted, but I believe it is possible. Greater minds will hopefully figure it out.

(1,372 posts)When I was in college, back in 1970, I met a guy from Georgia and he was very progressive in his thinking. Being from MAss. I was amazed that a young person could grow up in a state like Georgia and still have liberal thoughts.
I just read a post (see link below) by someone from a red state who talked about how it was to be a liberal and be surrounded by conservatives, racists, whatever you want t call them. It really made me thing that we need to start to support these people because they stand with us under very dangerous circumstances (against their neighbors and relatives) while we sit in Blue and see that our votes actually elect liberals and keep this country from fallling into a very dark place where wealth is power and the ruling class is prejudiced against everyone else and there is no American Dream to work toward.
Hey Red State DUers. A message for y'all.

I think we need to think of a way to send these people reminders in our posts that show we are thinking of them and are glad they are on our team.

(6,664 posts)When I defend the US auto industry and the UAW and point out that there is a massive trade imbalance with Japan when it comes to importing and manufacturing US automobiles to and in Japan. I am lectured about the perceived poor quality in US cars, reminded how many are made in the US (by non Union labor), and given meaningless statistics about the trade balances with other goods.

(19,841 posts)look at it, feel it, know it. Then incorporate your whole state into your worldview. I realize that's hard for people who have to shore themselves up by tearing others down. Otherwise you're just perpetuating the media myth of "red vs blue."
There's no place for South baiting/bashing on DU. It's nasty and alienating. People who do it look smug, superior, and ignorant.
