holy shit, what just happened?
I wanted to know more. I kept checking my phone for a news notification.
nothing.
Snip
actually, you dont have to imagine.
Joe, rather physically fit for his 81 years, did fall off his bike. and then he got right back on and rode away and the media had a fucking field day. it should have been a two-sentence story, but it was in the news for a week afterwards. the press literally would not shut the fuck up about it.
Edited to add. Not a blackout per se, but definitely seems like a concerted efforts to squash the story.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that hes fine, after freezing during a news conference on Wednesday.
He said nothing, and was led away from the press conference and toward his office by an aide. He returned to the news conference a few minutes later.
His point is that it wasn't covered extensively like if something happened to a Democrat.

(29,293 posts)but that was not "momentary lightheadedness"
It looked to me like a transient ischemic attack.
The symptoms of a TIA are similar to those of a stroke and include:
Numbness or muscle weakness, usually on one side of the body.
Trouble speaking or understanding speech.
Dizziness or loss of balance.
Double vision or trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
Symptoms of TIA usually last only a few minutes.

Kavanaugh, at least as stupid, mass. Doctors are saying, "sorry, dude", they won't be able to deal with any of these issues this close to an election. Of course he could be wrong, but anyone cold be wrong - it's definitely a possibility.

(82,849 posts)End of story. Well, except for one or two more questions about what the hell that was. DallasNE
(7,418 posts)Lightheadedness would cause you to look for the nearest chair before passing out. Vertigo would have you grasping the lectern to maintain balance and last about 20-30 seconds. Both would require concentration and cause you to suspend speaking.
in my experience. Especially when there are others around me. It goes something like, Hey, I need to sit down before I pass out someone get me a chair or help me to one. It's never rendered me unable to speak nor required so much concentration that I wasn't able to speak.
SunSeeker
(52,048 posts)He didn't say he had vertigo, he said he had "lightheadedness."
But he wasn't acting like someone with lightheadedness. He stopped, mid-sentence, standing straight up, looking straight ahead and froze for 20 seconds, until those standing next to him shuffled him away. It was like his brain just switched off. He wasn't swaying back and forth as they led him away, he seemed like he didn't know where he was. That is why his behavior was so weird. People with lightheadedness wobble, and like you said, search for a chair. He didn't do that. It sure seemed like those Republicans had gone through this with him before. They didn't seem shocked or surprised, and intervened rather quickly.

(870 posts)what is the procedure for his replacement? Does Kentucky's governor get to provide one?
And if so, is that the reason for the secrecy? We all went through it with Feinstein. But if the idea is the case, there could be an additional Democratic Senator...soon?
Any thoughts?
oldsoftie
(12,784 posts)But maybe different states have different laws.
leftieNanner
(15,241 posts)Kentucky Republicans passed a new law recently that requires the Governor to select a replacement from the same party as the exiting Senator - from a list provided to him by the Republican party.
ugh
I wonder if he can just leave the seat open for a while.
oldsoftie
(12,784 posts)But I guess I dont really have a problem with that law. The state voted for a republican, then it shouldn't be up to the Gov to change that choice.
I bet that the "list" would have a few doozies on it; just pick the WORST one

(17,306 posts)Even if any of the outlets are owned by 'liberals' I doubt most ceos want to upset the applecart. So you aren't going to really get news. You'll get 6 slants on the same story, which someone deemed more newsworthy than an old man zoning out while he was talking to the press. Unless he is a Democrat and then there will be much clutching of pearls and wringing of hands.
The news media might cover the Mitch Glitch, but the story will be minimized and buried.
I kind of hoped it was an aha moment and mitch realized all of the harm he's done to the U.S. and might not only freeze, but rewind.

(22,081 posts)but it can happen.
I looked up absence seizures in the elderly. One source said that TIAs and absence seizures in the elderly can be related. A TIA is a vascular event, a temporary blockage of a small blood vessel (capillary). People who have chronic TIAs can develop absence seizures from brain cell damage caused by TIAs.
I wanted to link the article, but it was very long and the section about the connection between TIAs and absence seizures in the elderly was far into the article. I am using my phone and could not select out the section that I wanted to.
We know that McConnell has vascular problems. Remember the photos of his hands looking red and purple some time ago? I am going to guess that he has taken blood thinners, which can cause easy bruising. The blood thinners would be prescribed for vascular problems. So maybe he has had some TIAs in the past and is now experiencing adult onset absence seizures.
Since he is determined to stay in office, he would keep secret all health information regarding his ability to perform.

(69,046 posts)were first cousins. This caused epilepsy in the family. One of my cousins had Petit mal epilepsy...this is what it looked like to me that happened to McConnell. One of my cousin's children has epilepsy. And my great niece, my sister's grandchild has it. My own Granddaughter was tested and they don't think she has it, but we are not sure. Time will tell.
Also, the small area in Virginia Where we come from has contained pretty much the same families since the 1600s. When my uncle and aunt were tested genetically. Although they never met before they ran into each other at a party were almost first cousins verging on siblings in terms of genetics. This is because of the marriages over time in a small area.

I still think it's an absence seizure, but TIA needs to be ruled out.
Something is wrong and he needs to face up to that. Chances are it can be controlled by medication.
SpankMe
(2,996 posts)McConnell is backed away from the podium by others and is positioned a few feet away while someone else takes the podium and speaks. He wasn't spirited away to another location.
He soon regains awareness and looks on normally. He then returned to the podium and spoke more, although he seemed slightly slower than his normal self.
I feel it's been covered adequately and proportionally up to this point. I'd be interested in a follow up knowing if he's since been examined by a doctor and what the cause of this seizure was.
