I hope they don't announce people's weight over the loud speaker!
Thats right: New Zealands Civil Aviation Authority is asking that its national airline weigh passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport through July 2, 2023.
The program, which Air New Zealand calls a passenger weight survey, is a way to gather data on the weight load and distribution for planes, the airline said.
We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold, Alastair James, the airlines load control improvement specialist said in a statement. For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.
Still, weight is a personal thing that not everyone wishes to disclose. In order to protect individuals privacy, the airline says it has made the data anonymous.

(21 posts)Its not like they can hide it in a general sense. Sure, people may not know a person is 287.5 pounds, but they sure as hell know theyre obese.
It makes total sense an airline needs precise weight. While theyre at it, they ought to pull out a ruler to see how girth compares to seat width.
When my wife and I took a puddle jumper from one island to the next on a trip to Turks & Caicos, I was surprised they took peoples word on how much they weighed. I wasnt too keen on my life depending on people admitting their weight!

People don't realize how crucial weights and balances are in a small aircraft.
