Also, 23% of my age group did as well in 2022, compared with 45% of the population overall. So we definitely did our part.
I know you support what I want, and the real problem is the other party. But I'm still going to blame you and stop voting if you don't get it done.

(1,654 posts)There's another thread on here where someone (not a DUer) takes Schumer to task for not pushing an assault weapons ban and basically saying the youth vote will stay home. I'm just a little tired of Dem-bashing (again, not by DUers) when the real problem is the GOP.

He is very articulate and I hoped he would mature but sadly...

Does he think the magats are going to help us when it would only get exponentially worse?
DH does have a history of going after the wrong people. I remember this kind of thing before.
I wonder what Fred Guttenberg thinks of this?

(11,760 posts)It is pointless to lobby a fundamentally opposed opponent.
I would debate whether it was lobbying or a threat.
I had a similar discussion with my wife regarding the tweet.
Certainly more young people voted in the last couple of elections, but it is still not enough. Certainly not enough to be demanding "or else" type things.
I actually would even agree with what Hogg is requesting regarding taking up a new AWB. The problem is that even with the increase in young voting, we still lost the House and are hanging on to the Senate by a margin in which one ill Senator created a hold up in confirmations of judges, and one conservative Democrat and one turn coat, have been able to derail a lot of changes that could have helped a lot of people.
If we had 54 Senators and control of the House, and were still handwringing about common sense gun safety laws, then I would 100% be behind Hogg.
From where we are now, it looks like someone stamping their feet. We need to get more, progressive Democrats elected. People who will take up the bold actions that Hogg and others are asking for. We need people who are going to fight and actually do things that benefit the average person and not primarily the wealthy. The "youth vote" needs to come out in earnest and show us old folks how to do it. 23% is not "doing it".
I have voted in every election except maybe one when I was sick and vote by mail was not as prevalent, since I was 18. I have volunteered for campaigns and have tried to do as much as I can locally. I would like to see the change I want, but you have to do more than tweet and threaten the leader of the party that is most likely to do what you ask. You have to show them that you actually have the backing of the group you purport to represent.

(11,760 posts)I took the meaning. The OP is sort of mocking the tweet from David Hogg where Hogg seemingly threatens Chuck Schumer with withholding the youth vote because Democrats back Background checks but won't commit to bringing up a new Assault Weapons Ban.
Hogg seemed to think that the way that young people voted in the last couple of election cycles, is enough to try to move the entire Democratic Party to backing the AWB and that telling Schumer this was a good political strategy.

(100,130 posts)If you don't vote, that's how the fascists win. And also take the time to educate yourself on who's running. Because there are some seriously batshit crazy candidates out there running, and those are the ones who tend to be the loudest, the most vocal, and the most deranged.
