(81,223 posts)One of the first things we need to do is start disabusing America of the notion that this is still a "center-right" country. IT IS NOT. CLEARLY! So verified and confirmed by Election 2012.

(81,223 posts)Glad you're here! Wonderful days! And a victory for you to share and enjoy! How it SHOULD be!
But we have to protect on the gains we made last Tuesday, AND BUILD UPON THEM!!! Can't afford for 2014 to come along and reverse everything we worked for!!!!
Remember what Mad-Eye Moody always told Harry Potter: "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!!!!!"

(81,223 posts)Glad you're here! "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!!!" Absolutely! that's the only way we can keep winning. So far, it looks as though the GOP is NOT learning the lessons of this Election Night. So they may well just keep steering farther down toward the edge of the falls. But there will be some among them who will be trouble. Stuff can flip, in a heartbeat, in politics. We have to make sure to be vigilant about protecting the ground we gained earlier this month. Because it can be so easily and swiftly taken back. The enemy fights relentlessly. They never sleep. They never lay down their guard. So, that means: neither can we.

(11,085 posts)Remember the Republican who said some stupid crap about rape? No, not that one, the other one. Not that one, either. I was thinking of YET ANOTHER ONE.
And how many talk about working class Americans, especially the working poor, as "moochers," nobodies worthy of no consideration? If you don't own your own business, which you believe you built John Galt-like all by yourself with no help from anyone (ignore the highway that brings customer traffic past your storefront and the water and sewer lines, oh, and that fat loan your rich parents spotted you), then the GOP doesn't give a damn about you. They have become the party of wannabe slaveowners.

(2,916 posts)Obama is just a man who may or may not lead this country forward. If he does lead up forward it, will be from people pushing up from the bottom. Not Obama being imbued with mystical powers form god, the devil or lots of inspiration posts.
And Andrew Sullivan is just some random guy who took a long time figure out the republicans were leading the country in the wrong direction. Longer than most of America. I don't why why anyone would want to listen to him. You want to listen to someone. Listen to some one who figured out before majority of the country.

(6,604 posts)Just because Andrew Sullivan might have been a bit behind the curve is no reason to dismiss his words.
I think what he said was well said, and am not put off by an inspirational photo now and then. It doesn't mean we can't still push or take credit for our efforts.

(15,411 posts)and I remember one in particular, you could tell it was a conservative guy, a republican, but a thoughtful one. He said Clinton was being treated unfairly. I'll never forget it and it is why Clinton's approval numbers while he was being impeached went so high.
I think that's what happened with Obama. I'll bet you a nickel that it motivated more people to stand in long lines because they got that the GOP was trying to disenfranchise them in one more unfair effort to discredit/defeat Obama.
I was also shocked that a much higher percentage of black voted this time compared to 2008. I would have thought it would have remained the same but from what I've heard, it was to protect a good president from unfair treatment.
I think that's what the GOP did not anticipate. They thought they would win based on 2008 models and assumed Obama would lose some swing voters because of the economy. They were probably right. What they didn't understand was the way the demonized Obama brought out a whole bunch of ppl who didn't vote in 2008.

(39,909 posts)He unequivocally states that he is a Moderate Republican,
but that today's Republican Party has moved to the extreme right.
The Democratic Party has followed them far enough to The Right that Moderate Republicans can now feel right at home.
As a traditional Moderate Republican he has no problem supporting today's Democratic Party.

(15,411 posts)who voted for Kerry and of course Obama.
I read him often and it has been interesting to see him drift on lots of issues. When we first started talking about health care in 2009 he was dead set against it. His frame of reference was the health care system in England where he was raised which he thought inadequate. Then he started to receive emails from readers with horror stories of our health care system if you are not rich (Sullivan must be fairly well off). He finally realized that if you are not well off in this country, or you have something bad happen to you, our system sucks and needs to be fixed.
There was a similar discussion about abortion. He's against it but readers sent him heart wrenching stories of their own abortions and it sounded like he moderated. I don't think he would support a full ban of abortions but you can tell his religion leaves him conflicted. I appreciate that he honestly discusses issues. You can sometimes come to at least see the other side whereas with people like Hannity and Rush, their arguments are so filled with vitriol you can't find any reason behind them.
