(2,812 posts)Former President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump participated in a CNN town hall Wednesday where he made numerous false claims about the violence at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Here is a fact check of some of those claims.
Security on January 6
Former President Donald Trump tried to blame then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the violence on January 6, 2021 when his own supporters stormed the US Capitol, claiming she was in charge of security that day.
Facts First: This is false. The speaker of the House is not in charge of Capitol security. Thats the responsibility of the Capitol Police Board, which oversees the US Capitol Police and approves requests for National Guard assistance.
Trumps former acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller also told lawmakers that he was never given a formal order by Trump to have 10,000 troops ready to be sent to the Capitol on January 6. There was no direct, there was no order from the president, Miller said.
Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows sent an email saying the National Guard would be present to protect pro Trump people in the lead up to the US Capitol insurrection, according to the report released by the January 6 committee.

January 6 violence
Trump asserted a couple of the January 6 rioters probably got out of control, comparing the insurrection to left-leaning protests that turned violent in other cities.
Facts First: This statement is false. Hundreds of rioters have been charged with violence toward police on January 6 and Trump downplaying the violence and equivocating the insurrection with social justice protests fails to recognize the severity of the attack on the Capitol.
The January 6 riot of Trump-supporters who overran the Capitol has resulted in the largest law enforcement response in modern history because of the sheer amount of violence on the ground, especially toward police, that day.
The number of rioters on January 6 whove been charged with violence toward police is in the hundreds.
According to the Justice Department this week, 346 people face federal charges for assaulting, resisting or impeding officers or other employees. That includes more than 100 people charged with using a weapon or causing serious injury to an officer. About five dozen have pleaded guilty to felony charges for these types of crimes.
And the FBI is still seeking information to identify more than 220 others who may have committed violent crimes on the Capitol grounds.
Even Trump-appointed federal judges have countered claims that left-leaning rioters in Portland, for instance, acted similarly to the pro-Trump crowd on January 6.
Judge Trevor McFadden wrote when handling a January 6 rioters case in 2021: Although both Portland and January 6 rioters attacked federal buildings, the Portland defendants primarily attacked at night, meaning that they raged against a largely vacant courthouse. In contrast, the January 6 rioters attacked the Capitol in broad daylight. And many entered it.
And another federal judge in DC, Carl Nichols, wrote: The Portland rioters conduct, while obviously serious, did not target a proceeding prescribed by the Constitution and established to ensure a peaceful transition of power. Nor did the Portland rioters, unlike those who assailed Americas Capitol in 2021, make it past the buildings outer defenses.
Police on January 6
Trump said that the police officer who shot pro-Trump rioter Ashli Babbitt was a thug who went on television to brag about the fact that he killed her.
Facts First: The US Capitol Police officer involved in the shooting, Lt. Michael Byrd, was defending the Speakers Lobby, adjacent to the House chamber in the Capitol building, during the riot. Babbitts fatal shooting occurred as a crowd tried to push through the Speakers Lobby doorway while the House was in still in session, according to the House select committee investigating January 6.
The Capitol Police declined to pursue any disciplinary action against Byrd, saying that they had determined the officers conduct was lawful and within Department policy. The Justice Department also said they would not prosecute Byrd, saying there was insufficient evidence to support a criminal case.
Byrd later did an interview with NBC Nightly News, where he said that he acted because there was imminent threat and danger to the members of Congress. Byrd said during the interview that he came forward publicly after being the focus of vitriol in right-wing circles.

Pence on January 6
Trump said that he doesnt believe then Vice President Mike Pence was in any danger during the several hours that a pro-Trump mob laid siege to the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
Facts First: While Trumps belief is subjective, this statement leaves out key details.
Although Pence was safely evacuated from the Senate chamber, swarms of rioters were caught on videotape moving through the Capitol building chanting hang Mike Pence!
Other threats levied at Pence from members of the mob included If Pence caved, were going to drag m*therf*ckers through the streets, and that Pence is nothing but a traitor and deserves to burn with the rest of them.
Pence himself said that the former presidents reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable.

(7,941 posts)Sheesh, not that hard to understand. How many watched the after show or read what you posted here? This doesn't matter. The lies went out, mostly unchecked is the point.

(2,812 posts)She corrected him several times.
Fact-checking in real time as a solo moderator with a serial liar can't be easy.
(added: you didn't qualify fact-checking in real time in your OP. Just saying.)

(7,941 posts)Her not being able to do it was why they should have had one there doing it, but dump wouldn't have allowed it. Which is why they are being criticized as letting him run the show. No I didn't include real time fact checking nin my post, nor did I give Nicolle's last name. Shame on me but you are making excuses for CNN platforming this guy with not anywhere near enough guardrails and having a worshipful audience.

(2,812 posts)Trump will be beaten by getting out the vote, countering his rhetoric and simply by having and articulating better ideas, not by some absurd circle-jerk of tattle-telling on the media.
No one is coming to save us but voters and ideas.

(11,767 posts)Defending CNN is odd in this situation. It isn't like they didn't know who Trump is or what he does.
Trump steam rolled the moderator, even as she fact checked or pushed back. He made her and CNN look stupid.
You don't platform fascists. Report about them, interview them, cover them if they are saying anything newsworthy. Just don't give them your airspace to spout their bullshit.

IMO, she is every bit as responsible for this debacle-- given she would have had to agree to do it (for her "30 pieces of silver" aka the 9 PM Prime time slot) and she really never tried to fact-check him until well into the second half. It is reported that she was given the ability to cut the event off if he abused the format. Well, he did, beginning with his first word, every lie thereafter, and going through his repeat slander/mockery of E. Jean Carroll. The latter makes me hope CNN gets their very own defamation lawsuit.
Those who defend Kaitlin can "enjoy" her and her Tucker Carlson MO--with whom she worked at Daily Caller. If you think that time did not slop over in her current attitude, or approach, I have news for you. Go see the archived youtube interview (originally on FOX) with her outrageous Soros allegations.

(7,941 posts)I posted a story yesterday about how Collins has kept up a good relationship with dump and his team. I think she is, like Licht, good at rising in a large organization and ethics, or in this case, our democracy, be damned. And I also hope CNN gets sued by a woman people should admire, Carroll.

(2,812 posts)But doing so, she knew, would be no walk in the park. People who worked in the Trump White House were incredibly manipulative and would straight up lie to you, so you had to filter through that, she explains. Then there were the personal attacks, where it wasnt just the standard fare of an administration thinking they hadnt been treated fairly, and it got incredibly personal, which, in my opinion, it never should. While others were turned off or exhausted by Trump and the new normal of the White House, though, Collins was convinced it was the best story in town and knew from day one that she couldnt walk away from it.

(7,941 posts)What's next, quoting The Daily Caller? Oh yeah her old gig. The piece you quoted proves what I said, "Collins was convinced it was the best story in town and knew from day one that she couldnt walk away from it." Yeah, couldn't walk away because it helped her career to play both sides; as did the town hall which i'm sure Lichrt thinks it improves her credibility as they just gave her a new prime time show. You need more than corporate sources and pithy phrases like "come on" if you want to keep making apologies for CNN.

(58,785 posts)over from Fox to Fox-Lite BECAUSE she was corrupt and wouldn't tune in. And I pretty much still assume serious character defects, or why was she there? There's no such thing as personality transplants, and people can't really change moral codes or attitudes toward truth like shoes.
That said, we each only have so much energy to turn against what we need to stop.
I'm missing whatever, or whoever?, is causing some to actively disagree with people they normally respect on MSNBC to divert their anger and blame AWAY from the horrendous Rough Beast already rampaging and threatening to destroy us. AWAY from the Beast's monstrous, dangerous audience who represent at least 50 MILLION voters. AWAY from CNN, surely adequately representative of the loathed corporatist billionaires and their greedy capitalist plotting?
TO the moderator honest experts agree provided the ONLY ethical note to this despicable debacle.
Just strikes me as so strange that I feel I'm missing some fact dots to connect. Is there a social media site or blog where truth is spoken that people like Rachel and Nicolle are hiding?
