There is a labor shortage. States are rolling back labor laws

that will put kids in danger.

Migrants should be given work permits to fill some of these gaps. Fixing the immigration system is not going to be easy. Republicans want to use it as a wedge issue, they don’t want to fix it. They will whine and complain that states will have to take care of migrants and how much it will cost. Makes sense to me that if they have work permits they can financially take care of themselves.

It’s time for responsible people to overlook the politics and find actual solutions.

It’s beyond ridiculous that we are rolling back laws on age limits, how long a kid can work and making it ok for them to do dangerous work.

This is not new. I come from a family of immigrants. My uncles came here to work on farms in the 70’s 80’s. They would stay for a few months and then go back home to Jamaica. I doubt that it’s gotten any easier to fill farm jobs since those days. Same for lots of back breaking tough factory jobs, slaughterhouse house, chicken plant jobs.

There was a series of expose articles while back about how chicken plants and other industries took advantage of addicts. Setting up “programs” that were supposed to be part of recovery. Meanwhile, they got free or cheap labor from people desperate to escape addiction.

Some of these industries are desperate for workers. It’s ridiculous to say immigrants are stealing jobs when damn near nobody wants these jobs.

Work permits would solve this issue. It works for both sides. Migrants can financially take care of themselves. The factory gets a labor force, the state gets taxes.

Look, immigration is a problem that requires a multi prong solution. This is just one possible solution for what to do about the people that are already here.

Human displacement is a world crisis. We have given in to letting the republicans frame this discussion. They are not looking for solutions.

much better then they currently are. Much more compliant work force when you can threaten to deport them if they complain.
Same with kids who don’t know they have rights.

His guest worker program got rejected, but it would have been great for em the country and for migrant workers alike.
