Many audience members at CNNs town hall with former President Donald Trump on Wednesday were disgusted and bewildered by the spectacle, but were told to be respectful and not to boo, according to a report.
The floor manager came out ahead of time and said, Please do not boo, please be respectful. You were allowed to applaud, claimed Republican political consultant Matthew Bartlett in an interview with Puck News senior political correspondent Tara Palmeri on Thursday.
And I think that set the tone where people were going to try their best to keep this between the navigational beacons, and that if they felt compelled to applaud, they would, but they werent going to have an outburst or they werent going to boo an answer, he said.
Bartlett claimed that, while many in the audience applauded and cheered the former president, there were also people that sat there quietly disgusted or bewildered. He estimated that while around half of the audience expressed vocal support for Trump, the other half sat in silence. Bartlett also alleged that Trump repeatedly lost the audience when he spoke about topics like January 6 or the results of the 2020 election, despite the appearance on CNN that the audience was consistently on his side.

The head of CNN seems to have claimed this event was an example of CNN making news rather than reporting news.
If the audience was instructed in how to respond in the way described,a false impression of unity of the live audience and Trump was presented to the viewers.

(318 posts)I didn't see any shocked faces or anybody leave. They all seemed giddy and thrilled with participating in this circus of crazy. I think if Mike Pence had been marched out and hanged the audience would have burst into a wild celebratory standing ovation...unfortunately or fortunately.

They knew why they were there and they knew the content of the dialog.... after all, they've heard it hundreds of times before. The only reasons to be there were to get their face on national tv and watch Donald kick some liberal ass.
NOBODY was surprised. NOBODY was disgusted.
BEWILDERED ! Now that one is accurate. They've been bewildered all their lives.

Sounds to me like damage control on the part of this "Republican consultant." He's savvy enough to know how bad this looked to anyone outside the MAGA bubble, how toxic it might be to other Republicans, and so feels a need to put some daylight between Trump and what's left of "respectable" Republicans.
As if that's still a thing.
