North Carolina's 12-week abortion ban bill: What's at stake

Pressure is mounting this week on abortion access in North Carolina. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has rallied residents and local doctors in an attempt to convince at least one Republican to uphold his expected veto of a bill, S.B. 20, that bans most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy, down from the current 20-week restriction.

“[State Republican legislators] rammed through a bill in 48 hours with no public input, with no amendments, that drastically reduces access to reproductive freedom for women,” Cooper said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

After the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, North Carolina saw the largest spike in abortions in the U.S., according to a WeCount report by the Society of Family Planning.

Cooper is expected to sign the veto during an abortion rights rally in Raleigh on Saturday. But Republican lawmakers hold a veto-proof majority in the state legislature. In order to sink the bill, Cooper would need just one Republican to vote against an expected override of the veto.

Stand Up! Fight Back! Protect Reproductive Freedom in NC!
It’s time to fire up the phones and keyboards to protect basic reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy in North Carolina!

As you may know, last week the NC GOP passed a monster anti-abortion ban. We believe Rep. Ted Davis may be wavering in his support for the ban, and we are asking you to encourage him to do the right thing, and VOTE NO ON THE UPCOMING VETO OVERRIDE.

Extreme, anti-abortion politicians in the North Carolina General Assembly just passed Senate Bill 20, a sweeping, monster abortion ban that will ban abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy in most cases. This omnibus bill also imposes more restrictions that will signifantly limit abortion access before 12 weeks for anyone in need of care in North Carolina.

This is a dangerous ban that will lead to substandard health care, higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, and more people forced to carry a pregnancy and give birth against their will. This is our now-or-never moment. We will need you in the coming days to hold the line on access to abortion in North Carolina and across the South.

Join us for a rally on Saturday, May 13, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. with Governor Cooper at Bicentennial Mall (enter on the Edenton St side) as he issues his veto of this dangerous ban. The fight is just beginning, and it all starts on Saturday.

RSVP now to join us at this historic veto rally!
