Two out of four Google News headlines name him. E.g., Who is Maricio Garcia? Now I wonder why the change in policy????????

(8,059 posts)That was always a myth. Name them and shame their families.

(18,935 posts)What?
If they are dead what good does shaming their family do? It may give a vicarious feeling of vengeance however it is possible the family is suffering as well, knowing what the person did.

(18,935 posts)It is simply about lashing out at someone. Culpability is irrelevant.
Should we punish the shooters descendants as well? Kick their kids out of school?

(8,059 posts)raised, supported, enabled monsters. They aren't entitled to good, happy lives when the victims' families will forever endure changed and damaged lives. "Society" didn't produce the Garcia's or Crumbley's or Cruz's or Klebold's or Harris's or Lanza's of the world, the parents did-- with their actively shitty parenting, or their neglect of mental or emotional support, or their provision of firearms and gun culture worship, or their self-absorption with their own lives, and so on. These killers don't arise from a crack in the ground. Someone made them.

(18,935 posts)Of blaming parents and/or other family members) for the actions of the criminal be limited to only mass killers?
What about Atlanta? He only killed one but shot several more. Should his parents be left in peace or publicly shamed?

(8,059 posts)Bad publicity! People don't love you as much! Neighbors aren't sure about you anymore! Man, that's too bad.

(18,935 posts)Old Testament then?
Exodus 34: 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

(8,059 posts)because the family that produced the monster doesn't deserve to have its privacy protected by keeping the name out of the public sphere. I have no idea what you're on about. Tell you what, maybe you can start a GoFundme for the mass murderer's family, since you feel so bad for them.

I don't believe in punishing people who may be innocent, at least not until it is shown they have some direct responsibility for the person's actions. YMMV.

(8,059 posts)the murder is "punishing" the family who produced the murderer? Are you serious? And yes, I'll repeat. I DON'T CARE if the killer's family suffers. In fact, they should suffer, even if only mental anguish--but a lot of them won't because they're bad people who raised a bad person. It takes a conscience and morals to suffer anguish and remorse.

(33,473 posts)I see no evidence that the identity of the mass killer impacts anything.
Even showing the mangled bodies wouldn't change minds in America.

Should we not mention that Vladimir Putin is responsible for the deaths in Ukraine?
