ALLEN, Tex. The gunman who opened fire on an outlet mall in a Dallas suburb Saturday, killing at least eight people, was a man in his early 30s who may have had white supremacist or neo-Nazi beliefs, people familiar with the investigation said Sunday.
Mauricio Garcia, a local resident, had multiple weapons on him and in his nearby car, said people familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe.
Authorities have not released a motive, but a patch on his chest said RWDS, an acronym that stands for Right Wing Death Squad, according to people familiar with the investigation. The phrase is popular among right wing extremists, neo-Nazis and white supremacists, they said. In addition to the weapons found on his body, investigators found another five guns inside his car nearby, these people said.

I suspect this explains the delay in releasing information on him.

Latinos can be white supremacists.

(4,413 posts)"Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish or who have a background in a Spanish-speaking country. In other words, Hispanic refers to the language that a person speaks or that their ancestors spoke. Some Hispanic people speak Spanish, but others don't.
In contrast, Latino refers to geography: specifically, people from Latin America including Central America, South America, and the Caribbean."

But in appearance, I'm the surprise during my first visit to HR when everyone gets the, "oh, we thought you were..." look due to my name. That's pretty common. I'd guess it happens often in CA and the other states in the greater Southwest borderlands.

(17,179 posts)I noticed that the U. S. census was designating Hispanic (or Latino) along with Caucasian, Asian, Negro, Native American, as a race. I had always thought people from all of the European countries and people in Spanish speaking countries were Caucasian. I mentioned my concern way back then, because I thought the designation was divisive. But most of the replies to my post said my opinion wasn't right. So I let it go.
Seeing that several people who could identify as Hispanic, do identify as white supremacists makes me think maybe I wasn't wrong.
My updated opinion is that anyone who identifies as a white nationalist has something profoundly wrong with their outlook.

(61,855 posts)Typically, forms will ask first if one is "Hispanic/Latino" or "Non-Hispanic/Latino." Then, the next option is to choose from among many "races" - which include Black, White, Asian, Indigenous American, or other.
Plenty of Hispanic people identify as white. It's always surprising to me that DUers are surprised by this.
Weren't wrong.

(42,721 posts)Although Allen and Collin County are much more diverse than they used to be, its still predominantly white and a GOP bastion. Certainly more white and GOP than the area where the police were searching a house in northeast Dallas.
The crowd and eyewitnesses I saw on the local news yesterday were mostly white.

It could be anything from seeing them happy including if they are hanging out with diverse crowd. Maybe seeing a white girl with black boyfriend. Maybe seeing them with lgbt people.
It's about jealousy and resentment.

(8,939 posts)Many Latinos interviewed about the attack and in the videos of those held before police released them all. Like the mostly black Mall attack in New York, was it not? Is this a Uvaldi like community? If so, it would be a prime target for white supremacy even if that person is of Latino descent. Says a lot about the hate produced to despise your own heritage. I mean, Stephen Miller hates Jews.

Its called an outlet mall, but its a nice part of town and the last time I shopped there (pre-Covid), the merchandise wasnt much different or cheaper than a regular mall.
Makes me wonder if he also had some personal connection/grudge with the mall.

Why Dont We Know Much About Right-Wing Terrorists?
Conservatives Fired The Guy Studying Them
JAMESON PARKER
AddictingInfo, JUNE 18, 2015 4:41 PM
After a mass shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, left nine people dead and a right-wing white supremacist arrested, the country once again faces the uneasy question of just how many so-called home-grown terrorists are out there heavily armed, ideologically driven, and violent.
Its a good question, but it may be tough to answer because for reasons that are astoundingly dimwitted, the Department of Homeland Security pushed out the guy who was in charge of watching them, and dismantled his team all the way back in 2009.
The beleaguered hero of this story is Daryl Johnson, a top government counterterrorism analyst working at Homeland Security who spent six years with the agency amassing a wealth of data on far-right extremist groups that posed various degrees of threat to citizens in the United States. In 2009, in the months after President Obama assumed office, he watched as these groups veered even further right, and began to fear that Americas first African-American president could be the catalyst of a major uptick in hate crimes and anti-government attacks.
In a landmark report released just months into Obamas term, and now looks downright clairvoyant, Johnson made the case that radical Islam is only a small piece of the terrorism pie:
Do not overlook other types of terrorist groups, the report warned, noting that five purely domestic groups had considered using weapons of mass destruction in that period. Similar warnings have been issued by the two principal non-government groups that track domestic terrorism: the New York-based Anti-Defamation League and the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center.
An annual tally by the latter group of what it calls Terror From the Right listed 13 major incidents and arrests last year, nearly double the annual number in previous years; the group also reported the number of hate groups had topped 1,000 in 2010, for the first time in at least two decades.
In response to that report, Johnson was destroyed. It wasnt his integrity or claims that got him in trouble, his facts were solid. Instead, it was the inconvenient truth that much of the threat comes from right-wing conservatives, and even more awkwardly, radical right-wing conservatives who say and think a lot of the same things mainstream right-wing conservatives say and think.

One famous such example, of sorts, is that of Argentina's Federico Klein - the highest-ranking gov't employee so far indicted in connection with 1/6 (born in the U.S. - but to a brother of a high-ranking dictatorship-era official).
Nominally a low-ranking State Dept. "adviser", Trump had given him Top Secret clearance (some believe he was a go-between in Trump's dealings with his pal Mauricio Macri - himself an admitted dictatorship sympathizer).
I wouldn't be surprised if this Mauricio García has connections with some former Latin dictatorship himself.

(18,041 posts)but you ain't white. In fact, even if you were still alive you'd never, ever, ever, ever be white. Ever. I don't get these people. I don't think some of them know how white supremacy actually works. What a lost soul, a tool of evil people and a complete fool.
In much of Latin America - except Argentina and Uruguay - people who are anything less than around 75% Indigenous or African often consider themselves "white."
Like many Latin American ills (corruption, violence, despotism, racism, extreme maldistribution of income, etc.), this has cultural origins in the Colonial era.
At the time, the Spanish landlords would often use Ladinos, Mestizos or other 'mixed' types to lord over the Indigenous or African slaves. The higher the % of apparent White blood, the higher-ranked said lackey would usually be.
Naturally, this created a state of intense mutual resentment between Ladinos and the downtrodden, darker people - a resentment that endures to this day.
Mauricio was definitely of Ladino/Mestizo background - and, I suspect, might have family ties to some death squad goon from Latin dictatorship in the '70s or '80s - many of whom fled to the U.S. under Reagan to avoid prosecution and/or revenge.
It goes without saying that most such escapees are now Republican.

people with conservative, right wing, dogmas. The type that listen to things like Limbaugh used to say or the other vitriol pumped out daily by the conservative machine that has determined (long ago) that human life < profits. I have always thought that images of these atrocity and others that firearms are specifically built to do should be shown. We can easily blur out any identifying marks. Maybe then people would really realize that there is a huge difference in the damage ammo especially the ammo designed for these weapons does.
If you have a contact or a community program that will let you ride along with FD or PD and see what this really is that these people are volunteering to face it will open your eyes.
It is sickening and disgusting that this country has done nothing on this even after 20 / 5-6yr olds were executed and now its no longer even thoughts & prayer from gop it is now just straight up what god wants and how dare anyone try to change that.
The gop is a terrorist organization. Look what it has either claimed complete incompetence about like 9/11 or dont believe what you are seeing and being told by those democrat heathens COVID is a hoax the 1000s of Americans dying every phucking day is not true and if it is were looking at injections of disinfectants
I mean JFC how much longer do they get a pass at the murderous governance in just the past 23 yrs. This party 1st /everything else like the USA last really took off with bush/cheney.
I didnt really start paying attention till the Lee Atwater/Iran Contra phase started with Reagan but the 60s/70s look like the gop had Dems on their heels the whole time then too.
