Bernie Sanders - the top 15 hedge fund managers make more than every kindergarten teacher combined

Bernie Sanders, Vermont senator and self-described democratic socialist, recently took yet another shot at one of his favorite targets: the filthy rich.

“The top 15 hedge fund managers on Wall Street make more money in a single year than every kindergarten teacher in America combined — over 120,000 teachers,” Sanders said in a video posted on Twitter and YouTube in February. He claimed the starting salary for teachers in almost 40% of school districts was less than $40,000 and that 43% of teachers overall made less than $60,000 in salary.

The top 15 hedge fund managers, meanwhile, earned $13.8 billion last year, according to an analysis by Bloomberg.

“This situation has become so absurd,” Sanders argued.

as that is exactly what I was going to say.

To those who think he should move on to other things I understand that but I think it is also important to have those who have their issues that they are expert in. I think we do need them to continuously keep us on the mark with those issues and not let them get put away. We can all think of more than one thing at a time and prioritize appropriately.

It would be silly to think he does not care about other things but this is nothing more than my opinion of course.

I think he is great. It has to be in the minds of people as well as everything else. We all choose our most important issues as elections draw near and these need to be right in the mix. I have always appreciated him for his tenacity and care.

We're awash in gun violence, the GOP is trying to destroy voting rights and what little remains of women's reproductive freedom, and continues to persecute trans people, ignore climate change and crush science, and Bernie just keeps yammering about millionaires and billionaires. Please, Bernie, help us deal with what's killing people right now.

Is it reported *earned* income (which, under laws that Sanders helped pass, has a specific meaning)?

Is it reported gross income (earned and unearned--also with specific meanings)?

Is it simply unrealized income from asset appreciation? (Note that it explicitly *ignores* losses carried forward from previous years.)

In common discourse these things are merged. My house appreciated $25k in the last year (mostly because nobody actually appraised it), is that "earned income"?

The first point is that the number may be inflated.

Second point--how much did kinder teachers earn last year?

I guess I could calculate an upper bound given the rounded stats (nowhere validated). "He claimed." And cited *starting* salaries ... Because all teachers are first year teachers .... Huh?

I'm in year 14 of teaching HS. Year 1: $51k. That was my starting salary. My current salary is 20% (or more) higher.

My ex is a kinder teacher. 20 years' teaching. PhD. She's 10% higher than my salary ... last year. Her *current* salary is pushing $70k. But, ya know, she's a kinder teacher and the starting salary is $60k. (Granted, seniority counts for little in my state--starting salaries increase, but those previously hired get increases on their *previous* year's income. One year my step-increase salary *was* the "new teacher" salary. As one teacher put it--you want to see your salary increase faster, every 4-5 years change school districts.)
