Former Vice President Mike Pence was interviewed by John Karl on ABC News, who played audio of Donald Trump justifying rioters chanting Hang Mike Pence!
KARL: I mean, hes effectively justifying, or excusing, the actions of people who were calling for you to be hanged!
PENCE: There is no excuse for the violence that took place at the Capitol on January 6th, and Ill never diminish it as long as I live, but, look
The presidents wrong. He was wrong that day, and I actually hoped he would come around in time, ton. That he would see the cadre of legal advisers he had him with had led him astray, and he hasnt done so. i think its one of the reasons why this country just wants a fresh start.
KARL: Does justifying those murderous chants, does that effectively disqualify him from being commander-in-chief again?
PENCE: I think thats a judgment for the American people to make.
KARL: Whats your judgment about it?
PENCE: Im confident theyll make it. Look, Ill be honest with you. I was angry that day, and while I believe in forgiveness, I have been working hard at that for awhile. The president let me down that day. He let the country down that day, but thanks to the courage of law enforcement, the riot was quelled. We reconvened the conference the very same day, and that very same day of tragedy became a day of freedom and Ill be proud of our small part in that, but to be honest with you the emotions of that day, the emotions since, I just havent had time for it. To me, theres just too many issues that were facing in this country today under the failed policies of this administration that I dont have a lot of time for looking backwards.
KARL: Could you ever support him again for president?
PENCE: I think thats yet to be seen, Jon.

(33,016 posts)I think he's afraid that the MAGAts will hunt him down and kill him. Remember after the Jan. 6 coup attempt, Pence went into hiding? I think he was out of the country for several months. He says he was at a religious retreat, but it sure looked like he was hiding.
Some of those crazy MAGAts have gunz.

(16,728 posts)He wants it so bad he can taste it, and he's deep enough in denial to think he has a shot. No, it doesn't make any sense, but I think that's the truth of the matter. I think he's wanted to be potus for a long time, and that's why he agreed to be Trump's running mate and went along with everything Trump wanted (up until Trump almost got him killed on J6).
As to why he wants to be potus, I honestly think it's about religion and a desire to turn America into the "Christian nation" he and other fundies think it's supposed to be. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to learn that he thinks he's been "called by God" for that purpose.
He definitely knows how crazy the MAGA cultists are, but one of the things he's in denial about is how much they personally despise him for refusing to help Trump overturn the 2020 election. If he thinks God wants him to be potus (and I believe he does), that means he thinks it's practically a done deal.

(116,122 posts)What a gutless, mealy-mouthed poltroon! The fly on his head had more balls and more of a spine, and flies don't have spines or balls. "I haven't had time"? Two years? He only ever did one thing in his life that he could be halfway proud of, and he did that only after being advised by Dan Quayle, of all people, that he didn't have a choice.

(14,188 posts)What is scary about MAGAts is they have zero ability to differentiate between terrible actions and behaviours and loyalty to the established leadership. One does not exclude the other. You first commit to an oath to Trump and MAGA and White Christian Nationalism......forever and ever. Then you deal with any "problems" that arise with any leaders behaviours after that. It doesn't matter if that leader shoots someone on 5th avenue, its loyalty to the cult first, and whomever is trying to badmouth it or its leaders is enemy #1. That criticizing the leader is much much worse than anything the leader could ever do. So bizzare.

(82,849 posts)"The country just wants a fresh start. I mean, we can go back and forth all you want about who threatened to hang whom and how a gallows was erected* on the Capitol grounds. But at the end of the day, there were mistakes made on all sides, and the fact of the matter is that I'm darned steamed about that day, too. But since I have no discernible spine, even in my own self-defense, I'm certainly not going to just blame the president."
*Ooops, I didn't mean to say "erected." Mother forgive me!

(16,728 posts)Pence is a guy who keeps a very tight lid on his emotions, at least in public. He's extremely good at keeping an expressionless face and concealing what he really thinks and feels. Thats a big part of how he was able to go along with all of Trump's b.s. for so long, nodding his head like a mindless bobble head no matter what.
During that interview, I saw his mask slip, just a tiny little bit. When the interviewer was pressing him about the J6 crowd chanting, "Hang Mike Pence!" and then played the recording of Trump expressing a less than zero amount of concern for Pence's safety that day, I saw more emotion on that poker face than I've ever seen before. His eyebrows got closer together and there were creases between them and across the bridge of his nose, deep ones. There was a tightness in his jaw, too. He was trying not to show any emotion (as usual), but not quite succeeding. He managed to keep his voice even, but I could see that he was really pissed about how Trump treated him that day.
He has to be careful what he says and how he says it, to avoid alienating people that he wants to get votes from, but it was evident to me that J6 is a very sore issue for him, and not without good reason.
Just wanted to share this observation, because I found it really interesting.
