Feb. 9, 2020, New Hampshire Town Hall, Candidate Joe Biden:

As he campaigned for president in 2020, Joe Biden responded to a New Hampshire town hall question unequivocally, adding repetition for emphasis.

"No more drilling on federal lands," he said Feb. 9, 2020. "Period. Period. Period. Period."

Biden repeated his stance a month later, saying at a presidential primary debate: "No more drilling on federal lands. No more drilling, including offshore. No ability for the oil industry to continue to drill, period, ends."

He asked us to believe him. And ya know what ? I did.

180 degree turns come with a lot of g-force, ya know ?

This was an old thing, not the Biden administration instigating new drilling on their own.

is that he didn't use enough "Period."s. Four "Period."s made it positive-negative-positive-negative, ending on a negative, otherwise known as a double positivenegative. One more "Period." was needed.

This made it fall under the well-known Real World Exception(tm) rules, also known as the "Enemy Of The Good" rule.

And I will prepare a set of wise-ish-sounding quotes to use on the next hurricane as it approaches. I'm confident that will stop it.

I have to laugh or cry.

The US just lost all legitimacy on climate issues in the world. Other countries will laugh if we talk about trimming their GHG output. And the millions of global poor who will drown, burn, and starve will be making the Global South a might touchy. Some of them have nukes.

I know it's hard to conceive of just how bad things can (will) get, when we can just turn on the tv and drown in fantasy. We have no precedent now to guide us; we try to interpret the threat in old familiar terms of wheeler-dealer. As a species, we have not faced this before. We're not equipped evolutionarily to comprehend how staggering our plight is. But we can try this on for size: Sixth Mass Extinction. You know, an event like the dinosaur-killer, except not in one day. Or if that's still too grand and abstract, try this: swimming with Great White Sharks, while bleeding.

on Ukraine by helping efforts that make sure Putin's forces are defeated, instead of taking their political leads from the sort of pro-Putin apologists who spout their anti-Democratic (and anti-democratic) nonsense over at Common Dreams.

It not healthy, rational, or sustainable. Nor is feeding into the threat posed by today's Republican Party by threatening Democrats who are acting responsibly.

Doesn't matter though as China's and India's output keeps increasing. China now emits more then twice as much GHG as the US.

Willow is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. It's a shiny object. Like complaining about the smoke from a neighbor's barbeque while blissfully ignoring the fast approaching raging forest fire coming over the hills

253. Biden slashed Willow by 40% while permanently protecting sensitive land; he had no leverage to kill

https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/interior-department-substantially-reduces-scope-willow-project

"Biden had no leverage re Willow. Lease was signed decades ago; courts overturned drill bans.

He could have challenged in court and delayed it 6mos, or he could negotiate and make it less bad.

He made it a LOT less bad.

You’re not an environmentalist if you’re mad about that.

Link below detailing how Biden slashed Willow by 40% while permanently protecting sensitive land.

All this on top of passing IRA and Infrastructure, representing the largest climate investment in world history.

This is an environmentalist president."

12. What's changed in the world since February 2020?

If you are stuck for an answer, Vladimir Putin--whose apologist friends at Common Dreams such as Glenn Greenwald, Chris Hedges, Jill Stein, Katrina vanden Heuvel, and Noam Chomsky all make excuses for and blame the West, NATO, and particularly the USA for his actions--invaded Ukraine, upsetting the global energy supply while engaging in genocidal agression.

Conditions changed. Liberal leaders, such as Joe Biden, must respond to drastically changed circumstances using intellect and reason, and recognizing that nations in the free world have counterbalancing interests. Among those interests, is stopping the march of Russian adventurism.

An intrinsic part of being a liberal leader is to embrace reason and to adjust the balance of policy decisions to real world conditions, unlike the tendencies of populist ideologues.

Leaders in every free world democracy are dealing with how to pursue critical climate goals, while at the same time not feeding Putin's war machine.

Having a measure of energy independence as we transition to cleaner energy--which is clearly a goal of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party--despite the bullshit claims to the contrary--makes this country and our allies less dependant on energy supplies from dictatorships, including ones that seem to be well-loved by Common Dreamers.

There are times when circumstances require 180 degree turns on some components of policies, as we hold steadfastly to other goals, including a transition to cleaner energy.

Not so hard to understand, if one employs critical thinking skills, really.

He could slowed it down with lawsuits or whatever, but he would have lost in the end. The leases on this were done well over 20 years ago.

Once they had the leases, he couldn’t really stop them from doing further oil and gas development. Since he couldn’t stop them, he extracted concessions to minimize the impact or damage.
