This one is a cautionary tale for my young friends so you will know what can happen:
Long ago there were entertainers called Bob Hope and Milton Berle. They were often on our little black-and-white TV sets wearing dresses, wigs and lipstick.
A dozen years later, Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis, starred in a movie wearing dresses, wigs and lipstick, as they tried to imitate Marilyn Monroe's hip-swinging, seductive walk in the movie, "Some Like It Hot."
There were more such hit tv shows and movies that came and went with gender-bending stories and stars.
And that my young friends, is how all of your grandparents became gay.

And to think, If I had been able to afford the 75 cent ticket to see that movie.... who knows what degradation I might have depended to?
Yes, Arnold. It's fukkin sarcasm.

(22,767 posts)Bosom Buddies (1980-82), with Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari, Holland Taylor and Donna Dixon. I loved that show, it was hysterical, and I never missed it.
First thing I ever saw Tom Hanks in, that I can recall. Coincidentally, perfect song for the current environment, too.
show too and yes the song is perfect for this time in our lives.

Monty Python did drag almost every episode.
And the one everyone forgets: Lassie. Although the character of Lassie was female, every dog in the part was male. Ruh Roh!

(20,515 posts)I think that's the issue. Even though then characters in To Wong Foo were gay, the actors were all straight. I think most of the "drag queen story time" men now are gay. It's certainly possible for a straight man to be a cross dresser though, especially for comic effect. Just look at Rudy Giuliani!

(34,021 posts)It was a rather funny sit-com in the early 1980's ...
The guys dressed up as "women" in order to be allowed to rent a room in an affordable "women's hotel." So the comedy ensues when they try to date the women who are staying there, while at the same time dressing as "women" to avoid scrutiny by the hotel management.
Good times. Innocent fun.
As an afterthought ... I never knew any women who actually dressed that way. But still, it was funny at the time.
