White House names names re sunsetting Social Security and Medicare

Senator Rick Scott introduced a plan that would sunset Social Security and Medicare every five years unless Congress votes them back into existence.

Senator Ron Johnson thinks five years is too long to wait. He wants to put the funding for Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block every single year.

Senator Lindsey Graham suggested raising the age for Social Security and cutting benefits for seniors while making them pay more.

Senator Mike Lee stated it is his objective to “phase out Social Security, to pull it up by the roots, and get rid of it.”

In the House – many members, including those who chair committees – have proposed cuts to Medicare and Social Security in exchange for preventing a default on our debts.

The Republican Study Committee released a budget that calls for privatizing Social Security and raising the eligibility ages for Social Security and Medicare.

If Republicans in Congress don’t want to cut Social Security and Medicare, they should propose a budget that reflects it. Until then, all they’ve got is their record.

(end snip)

White House tosses their quotes on video right back in their faces. GOP, don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining.

The Windfall provision cut Social Security for public sector employees with both pensions and Social Security. The age for retirement was increased. When Republicans say that they aren't attempting to cut Social Security we need to keep history in mind.

I have been hearing that "Social Security won't be there" since I was in my early 20's. But I don't ever recall hearing from those people "So we need to fix Social Security so it will continue to provide at least the same amount." The only solutions that they touted were "Cut the benefits" and "Put the money into Wall Street." The propaganda is pervasive. Before Al Gore was prevented from taking office by the supreme court he suggested putting Social Security in a lockbox. Even Saturday Night Live made fun of him for that.

in the US are Wall Street and Social Security, and as soon as the supreme court put Bush the Second in office he started promoting the privatization of Social Security and channeling Social Security money into Wall Street, just before the tech bubble popped and 9/11 also drove the market down.

across this country. When my sis was in assisted living Idaho decided to screw with Medicaid / disability. People throughout the facility were desperate. No depends, ensure, medical care or aids. Imagine if they cut the Social Security. What those State Representatives did caused a very dangerous situation. It became clear that my sister was the only private pay resident in the facility. The fallout from killing Social Security would be a disaster.

reduce, let alone eliminate, Social Security and/or Medicare it would force most seniors who own homes to sell their homes into what would be a plummeting real estate market to have money to pay for their medical and living expenses. Of course the homes would be bought up for pennies on the dollar by hedge funds. And the next generation would be left without an inheritance to pay off their school loans.

How can a party with an elephant for a symbol forget the Great Recession and the financial market crash (that THEY CAUSED!)?? That crash virtually DECIMATED private investment accounts--and they want to turn over our Social Security pensions to the SAME vultures who nearly wiped us out financially then?? To those idjits, I can only say: "Proceed--with SELF-FORNICATION!"

As Paul Krugman noted years ago, all these faux concerns about Social Security and Medicare amount to nothing more than, “Let’s cut entitlements now so that we don’t have to cut them later.” They have a coin toss game they like to play: “Heads I get tax cuts, tails you get benefit cuts.” I hope they get their asses singed on the third rail.

What excuses are they going to use next time when it's time to pay the bills and we need to raise the debt ceiling?

Time to cut education?
Public works?
The National Weather service?
Department of the Interior?
Federal lands?
Support for the states?
Social welfare?
Agriculture?
Highways?
Railroads?
Airports?
Maritime industries?
The judiciary?
The Department of Labor?
National Defense?
Stop funding FEMA?
Other health spending?
No more VA hospitals?
No Medicaid?
SNAP?
WIC?

They sure won't decide to give themselves pay cuts for the good of the country. You can take that to the bank.

It wouldn't stop with Social Security and Medicare. They want to disband the entire government. That's always been the endgame. We must never forget that fact.

"Oh, we're not cutting Social Security and Medicare, it'll be re-authorized every five years, no problem." Yeah, like what you fuckers do whenever it comes to raising the debt ceiling under a Democratic president? "Oh, we'll never let the country default on its obligations." Unspoken of course is, "As long as you give us, the minority, some outrageous demand we can't pass on our own."

Every time, and I mean every frickin' time it came to re-authorize these taxpayer benefits you know for sure Republicans would move immediately into "Nice retirement program you have there; be a shame if something happened to it."

40. It's Elementary, My Dear Watson: Republicans Are Suffering from Santa Envy Syndrome!
Thu Feb 9, 2023, 09:35 AM
Feb 2023

The Democrats were the Santas who brought us Social Security, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act. The Republicans envy these Democratic accomplishments, and, out of pure bitterness and spite, would like to do away with them if at all possible. In addition, The Republicans are totally bereft of any "Santa" gifts to the American people. This is terminal Santa Envy Syndrome pure and simple; it's terminal because the Republican party seems to be locked into a sabotage mode, resulting in a potential death spiral for our democratic republic.

Back in the good ole days, when the Republican party exhibited some semblance of sanity, Republican presidents like Dwight Eisenhower told us the plain truth that any politician, Republican or Democrat, who proposed doing away with Social Security would be dismissed as being totally off his rocker. This was back in the day when Republicans put country over party, and realized that if a gift to the American people was truly valuable and worthwhile, it wasn't the giver that was the primary consideration - it was the gift itself.
