General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHi DU, as some of you know I am in hospital.
I went back in the hospital after being hospitalized in July with heart complications of Covid. I was in AFIB, Covid pneumonia
the whole Shebang. I turns out I dont just have AFIB. They did get me out of it for on Wednesday after cardiac shock didnt work. Nope the aortic valve is bad and will have to be replaced. I think they are keeping me until the surgery. The valve is crushing and weakening the heart which is why I am out of breath and in cardiac failure. It is why I had AFIB.
The procedure could be open heart or it could be a more modern version
forgot the name. But it will be one of them. The procedure is not without risk although I am optimistic. I have a genetically obtained Tricuspid aortic heart valve. They wear out faster. I am relatively young. This is mostly seen in older folks
Just in case things go south and I dont think they will, I want to tell all of you how much you mean to me. And how much this site means to me. Thank you all for being there with me thru the good and the. And thank you EarlG for this wonderful site. It is a wonderful place populated with fabulous people. There is nothing like it anywhere else. With love and gratitude

I got out of the hospital last Thursday. Meds would not correct it until I had a ⚡️cardioversion ⚡️.
Now my heart is beating like I was in my 20s.
After a series of tests, they could nothing wrong with my heart and are at a loss for why it happened.
It turns out that some of the ingredients in the day & night suppressants can trip AFIB. So a word of
warning, only take stuff that is the HB or heart safe stuff. I was taking a famous brand starting with M
every four hours. On Saturday & Sunday nights I switched to the might version. Monday at 4AM I awoke
from my sleep, skipping a few beats and in AFIB.
I wish you well and hopefully they can get a handle on it. It sounds like they know what is needed.
I'm sending positive vibes to you as I now know how scary this is.

(2,766 posts)That's a wonderful attribute. My husband had his aortic valve replaced with a pig valve about 9 years ago. In his case, he had a genetically defective bicuspid valve which had become nearly blocked from calcium build up. I am sure you will do very well, after about seven weeks of the major part of the healing.
With his valve blockage reducing his blood flow to just 20 percent of normal, his circulatory system wasn't removing waste materials. An unexpected symptom (at least to me) was terrible migraines lasting as long as four days. Just want to raise awareness on that one.
We look forward to you getting that valve fixed, you regaining your health, and enjoying many future discussions with you.

(141 posts)While to the best of my knowledge COVID is not a factor, I too have been experiencing AFib. They have already tried shock (cardioversion) with success that lasted 1 week. In March I will be undergoing a procedure called catheter ablation where they freeze connection to the heart. It is supposed to stop signals from the pulmonary vein that cause unwanted heartbeats.
I don't know how similar this is to your situation, but I am as frightened as I suspect you are. Let's hope for the best for both of us.

(11,572 posts)In 2010, I had both the mitral and aortic valve replaced with one tissue and one metallic valve. This after literally months of not knowing what was wrong, and coming much closer to catastrophe than I'd ever want to be again. The root cause was a Staph A infection attempting to turn my heart into mush.
Both my surgeon and cardiologist said that mine was the most damaged heart they'd ever seen anyone survive. A personal best for them, huzzah.
Recovery was long, but eventually excellent. I went from not being able to walk the 100 feet to the street corner and back, to doing 2 miles in 40 minutes with my dog each morning. That may not sound impressive, but for a guy in his mid-60s in the shape I had been in, I'll take that result all day long. There is no reason I know of that would prevent you from achieving a similar result.

(34,139 posts)I got one in 2017. It is not invasive and since they don't crack your chest open, usually you can be out of the hospital the next day.
I was actually enrolled in the study to get TAVR approved for low risk patients. Got all the way up to signing all the paperwork and getting the final CT scan to make sure my arteries were clear enough for the procedure. Unfortunately for the doctor managing the study at the local hospital, the CT scan found a mass on my left kidney.
The cardio-thoracic surgeon was hoping it could be sectioned and I could stay in the study, the the urologist he sent me to determined that with the location of the mass, my kidney had to be removed quickly, but he wanted my heart to be fixed first. At that point I was no longer low risk so I got the TAVR and a month later, they removed my left kidney. The TAVR procedure was the easiest operation I have ever been through.
Oh you are not under full anesthesia for the procedure - you have to be somewhat aware during it. I had been so worried that I only got three hours sleep the night before and fell asleep during - the anesthesiologist was kind of freaked having to wake me up.
I wasn't aware, but my husband said there were nine surgeons in the operating room. Since this was a new procedure, they were training up all their cardio-thoracic surgeons to do it. Plus, as the ads on TV show, hospitals anticipated doing a LOT of these in the future.
What to watch out for - vasovagal syncope and low blood pressure. I had one syncope the day after the TAVR. That delayed my departure from the hospital for a day. Sometimes if the syncopes are more often or severe, they might put in a pacemaker.
Good luck, Terry!
