I understand that some members of the deceased Republican party are beginning to whine about

how they're being treated at restaurants, airports and other public places. They have complained that they are being "discriminated against" because of their "conservative views". The problem is not with their "conservatism"; it's with their FASCISM.

They have perverted conservatism so profoundly that the word now means something not at all like what it did a couple of decades ago. I have never agreed with much that true conservatives stood for and I have seriously disliked many of them. But, I never HATED them before these last several years.

Nowadays, "conservatism" is simply a label many have co-opted because it sounds much better than "fascist" or "racist" or "bigot" or "misogynist" or "homophobe" or some other more accurate descriptor of the cowardly thuggish scum they are.

Liz Cheney is a conservative. Adam Kinziger is a conservative.

If anyone is harassing them in public, they are likely wearing red caps.

but it was usually possible to have a rational discussion about the role of government - guns vs. butter, how taxation should be implemented, whether and to what extent incremental change is better or worse than major system changes - all that stuff. But these days most of the people who call themselves conservatives are nothing of the kind; they are bigots, fascists, nihilists, Nazis, or all of those things. I see no reason why they shouldn't be shunned, just as you'd shun someone who turned up wearing an armband with a swastika.

That's exactly how they've morphed, almost all of them. It stopped being "my Grandpa's Republican Party" in the early 80's. There's no more polite disagreement any more.

The world has changed around them. It used to be that they were comfortable. They didnt have to scream in your face to make sure anyone not white and male would stay "in their place". So they could do and believe exactly what they do now, but seem normal. Now it takes effort and looks ugly in comparison to what we know it should/could be.

Tue Jan 31, 2023, 04:12 PM

Conservatism unchecked will, given enough time, develop into at best authoritarianism, and at worst fascism.

The idea that there is a "natural hierarchy" and that the best structure for society is a pyramid, is the underpinning of Conservatism. They took that from the monarchical and aristocratic government systems of the past and have NEVER relinquished it.

When you believe that some people are simply better than others and it is a result of God or Nature's God making it so, that justifies oppression of the "lowers".

The difference between Conservatives and Fascists is the degree of subjugation and the "Who" that needs to be subjugated.

Big ongoing error not treating guilty insurrectionists summarily and for what they specifically attempted to do (steal the USA) and mostly failed (so far).

What troubles me is that the GOP stole the 2000 POTUS election assisted by the USSC (and Roger Stone and others) and skated (and ran the USA into a ditch). Nothing happened to the guilty in 2000.

First it was little anecdotal incidents, like someone's missing jewelry assumed taken by a black cleaning lady. Then it proceeds from there. Now my nephew who is graduating from college in San Diego is a big fan of Florida, supposedly because of their "no masks" requirements. It's insanity to me. But there is no winning when making fun of life saving behavior becomes sport. That's what their team thrives on. And that is our neo civil war.

the conservative movement lost their raison d'etre. They didn't have anything to offer a nation that was becoming more and more diverse. To retain and expand their power, they made political alliances with the fringe elements of the political spectrum to the point where Mike the Pillow Guy had a realistic chance of being the RNC chair. That's how far they've gone.

or at least on life support. The Republicans strangled it, and democracy, when they chose an authoritarian for their candidate. And the corporate Republicans knew this. They were going to have a brokered convention to pick another candidate, but they realized that they couldn't win without Trump because he was so wildly popular with their authoritarian base which is 80% of their party. So the corporate 20% put party before country and picked Trump. Amazingly, some of the corporate Republican leaders, such as the Bushes and Romney, refused to support Trump even when he was their candidate. For a democracy to be viable there have to be at least two viable parties committed to democracy. With the Republican party controlled by the authoritarian 80% the US has only one party committed to democracy.
