Advice please-dental work in Mexico

Hi all,

Has anyone here had dental work in Mexico? I'll go easy on details, but upshot is I have a dental mess on my hands.

After multiple entries into the lottery for reduced cost care at the UNC Dental School Clinic, I was finally got in. The cost for my treatment plan, at a 50% reduction over standard costs, is $35,000.00. Please explain how anyone with a moderate income can afford that price.

I've heard great things about dental work in Mexico with costs coming in at roughly 30% including travel and lodging cost. Has anyone gone to MX for dental work? If so, can you please give me recommendations for a dentist, clinic or location? I've traveled a good bit in MX on my own, on public buses, and with lower cost lodging so I'm cool with that part. Just looking for recommendations on the dental aspect.

Sincere, much appreciated and big thanks to anyone who can help me out with information!

(In looking into this issue, lots of the information refers to "medical tourists". Frankly, I'd call us medical refugees. Damn our corporate enrichment healthcare system).

I can tell you that you can have excellent work done in Mexico for a fraction of the cost. The one thing that I would absolutely require if I were you, is the name brand and particulars of whatever implants are placed in you and to cross check that this device is available in the United States in case you need service upon it. Interchangeable implant components are almost nonexistent and if the brand is not easily available in the USA or has been discontinued, and you have a problem, you have a bigger problem than you can imagine. Good luck to you and I really hope things work out.

We live an hour from the Border of Mexico and he had a friend whose wife is originally from MExico and they go for all his dental work to Nogales, Mexico. Long story short, husband had entire top teeth removed and replaced with implants. This was in 2019 and I believe it cost around $10,000 dollars and they did a great job. Because implants needed bone grafts he had to go there 3 times over a period of 5 months. Fast forward to last week and husband needed 7 teeth pulled from the bottom and implants. He is 87 and now tires very easily so I decided the trips to Nogales would be too much for him and found a dentist locally. The price of this work was $10,000. It is crazy how much dental work costs and even having insurance barely helps at all if you have it.

Wishing you well!

near Yuma so we met a few people that went to Algodones Mexico for dental work. Some were really happy with the care they received but then again some had to go back and find another dentist to fix what the other screwed up. So do your research on the provider find some references. We met one guy from Wisconsin? that could take a 2 week vacation, get his dental work done and still be money ahead. I know that there's some good US trained dentists there. I hope that you can find the right one.

Might want to look into that too he goes to Medellin.
I have flown down there for between 3 and 400 out of Florida on Spirit.
Hotel rooms started $10 and up.

His primary residence and family are in TJ, but his ex wife and oldest son, now going to UCSD on scholarship, live in San Diego. He works half time here to help pay for his son's college.
He's an excellent dentist, and as a poster above mentioned, has access to implants and dental hardware that can be found in both Mexico and the US.
My understanding is that there's quite a few good dentists from Mexico who are working in San Diego a few days during the week for the additional income and access to US insurance plans.

Word of warning - if they're doing the work in the US for your insurance purposes, they're doing the work at US market rates-you won't see a discount for fairly normal procedures like cavities or a root canal and cap. For those, you will need to actually cross the border to go to their Rosarita Beach, Tijuana or Tecate clinics.

It cost me $200 cash. The dentist was Dr. Carreon, educated and trained in San Antonio, TX. The office was immaculate, with all the latest equipment. The staff spoke English and French in addition to Spanish, and catered to tourists from the USA and Canada. I stayed in a motel in Weslaco and drove to the border, about 7 miles. I parked in a lot by the bridge (cost $5 per day) and walked across the bridge. Dr. Carreon's office is in the building directly to your left on the second floor. When I walked in, the waiting room was filled with retired Americans. One thing I will mention is that they do not use nitrous oxide gas in Mexico as it is illegal there. The work was good and painless. The crown was done about 15 years ago and I have had no problems with it. Also, I was able to purchase my blood pressure med over the counter in the farmacia for just a few dollars for a six month supply. Same medication I received in the US. One more thing: while you are there, purchase vanilla. It is so much cheaper there, and good quality too. Hope this helps!

Consider checking the larger cities which are tourist destinations. They tend to have larger facilities, latest equipment, dentists trained in the US and Europe who speak English. Google medical tourism to find lots of information. Here are some typical websites:
