Finley and Cadigan were tasked with transporting Moore in an ambulance. The pair allegedly placed Moore face-down on a paramedic stretcher and incorrectly tied him down with a medical strap across Moore's back and lower body.

"Following the arrival of EMS, Earl Moore Jr. became the victim of acts which caused his death at the hands of individuals called by police to provide emergency medical care," Wright said.

An autopsy revealed that Moore died from "compressional and positional asphyxia due to prone face-down restraint on a paramedic transportation cot stretcher by tightened straps across the back."

The pair should have known from their training and experience that positioning a patient in such a way "would create a substantial probability of great bodily harm or death," Wright added.

Finley and Cadigan were booked into the Sangamon County Jail on a $1 million bond each. If found guilty, both EMS workers face up to 20 to 60 years in prison.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (TND) — They showed up to save a man's life, but they're accused of taking it.

Two emergency medical workers in central Illinois are charged with first-degree murder and the reason has to do with how they placed a 35-year-old man who was in distress.

WICS reports it was the police who called paramedics on that day in mid-December.

Peter Cadigan and Peggy Finley arrived, and Sangamon County State's Attorney Dan Wright said they placed the patient, Earl L. Moore Jr., face down on the gurney, and tightened the straps across his back.

We have three videos that are each about 20 minutes long. It shows the moment police arrived on scene on Dec. 18 at the home on North 11th Street.

"Get up or you can stay here," that's from the body camera footage.

The video shows police officers walk Earl L. Moore Jr, 35, of Springfield, out of the residence and onto a waiting gurney.

Moore died at St. John’s Hospital an hour later.

"Upon arrival, they quickly identified that Mr. Moore was in medical distress and promptly requested that an EMS team be dispatched to the scene," said Dan Wright, Sangamon County State's Attorney.

"You're going to have to walk cause we ain’t carrying you.. because I am seriously not in the mood for this dumb s****," that's from the body camera footage.

In the videos, you can hear the first responders telling Moore to get up.

An autopsy concluded he died from compressional and positional asphyxia, because he was placed face down on the stretcher with straps across his back.

"He should be alive today, and the police department did everything they could to prolong his life until the experts, the EMT got there to take over," said Teresa Haley, president of the Springfield NAACP.

"They strapped him in good and tight, he ain't going anywhere." That's also from the body camera footage.

at the hands of racist assholes posing as first responders.

Why do the job if you don't have compassion? Go fix trucks or something that doesn't require you to be with people in need.

the way he tossed the patient down. Horrific.

I think cadavers at the morgue are treated with more dignity and compassion than what this patient received.

And the expressions on their mug-shot faces are priceless: "I should be at home eating a Big Mac, watching TV."

If these two EMTs saved lives previous to the Instant Offense, I wonder who they were....

it pays poorly, the hours are terrible, and it beats you up emotionally and physically. It's rare to see people that old still working in the profession.

and I was handled roughly by the EMTs who took me to the hospital when I had really serious covid.
They told me they didn't believe I couldn't walk, that they thought I was faking. I heard the head EMT tell the other one that they needn't be too careful with me because there was nothing wrong with me.

When I got to the ER, I was diagnosed with hypoxia, covid pneumonia and encelopathy.

You never transport a patient face down because they can suffocate.

This is the cause of death.

compressional and positional asphyxia

That happens when you transport someone face down. As EMTs, there is no reason we would want to transport a patient face down because it's harder to monitor and treat your patient. Occasionally the police will push EMTs to transport this way because it's harder for combative patients to struggle. It was really bad that it appeared the EMT wanted to go face down, and that's what killed the patient.

And they all look like the people in the mug shots. Older, white, people who don't look particularly healthy.

Over the years, the group in our town has insulated themselves and really discouraged new people from coming in. This will eventually become a big problem.

years and the EMTs have been extremely professional. The old guy with one team was charged with instucting the kids on thle team and everyone did his or her job.

That this time cops were the good guys and the anbulance crew were the pigs is scandalous, although 1st degree murder does seem a bit extreme.

But I don't think 1st degree murder is extreme at all. It appears to me that they intended to kill the guy, maybe for kkkicks or some kind of quota among their peers.

regarded legally as effectively equal to murder. I didn't say that in good legalese, but you get the idea. These EMTs would know transporting someone strapped down prone could result in death and did it anyway.

Reminds me of the "rough rides" depraved police officers may give prisoners, like tossing someone in cuffs on the floor of a vehicle and deliberately bouncing and throwing him all over so that significant injuries are common and death is unquestionably possible, though specific action to kill is lacking.

As they say, they're going to go through some things. But it looks like involuntary manslaughter to me: Actions not intended to kill, but negligent, divergent from training. The penalty can be 12-18 months.

And "you're gonna have to walk cause we're not carrying you".

So sad that these are the last minutes of a man's life. He was trying to get sober with a "3-4 fifths a day plus beer" habit. (I've never heard of anyone that bad.)

He would have been better off not calling 911, though he could have died anyway from withdrawal.

That EMT shows a recklessness and total lack of concern.
