... to Matt Gaetz speaks for all of us I think:
?
edit: In all seriousness what are these fuckers asking them for? We saw the very bizarre video with Gosar seemingly pleading with AOC... now Gaetz making the rounds with the most liberal members of the House... what could these freedom caucus loonies possibly think they have to share ground on?

(13,646 posts)I am sure they are trying to promise things to democrats that they have no intention of keeping. Do they really think democrats would fall for that!

(9,209 posts)Just a theory. However, it basically went that all this is really an attempt to dismantle the seniority system in the House or at least greatly damage it. It's an attempt to leverage the Speaker's vote so the power and influence of the party's base is included when it comes to power and influence in the chamber (assignments and things).
A lot of commentators don't really understand the dynamics at play in all this (because they're only reading limited bubble spaces). The base absolutely loathes Establishment Republicans. Loathes. McConnell, McCarthy, the whole lot. And it doesn't mean they're all in on MTG or Boebert either. Gaetz isn't a personal hero to them.
What they rail against are things like the recent omnibus bill. They were absolutely spitting fire when McConnell supported it. They wanted it pushed to the next Congress where they'd have more influence over it. They see this as another betrayal in a long list of betrayals on government spending by people like McConnell. They see McConnell as highly corporate friendly, highly government contractor friendly, and basically a creature of DC who says conservative things but will always support and vote for what they refer to as the Uni Party (meaning everyone in DC belongs to the same party - the pro government power and corporate influence party).
They don't want McCarthy, but they're fairly resigned to the idea they'll get him. So the play is to do as much damage and restructure what the House looks like as much as possible before the inevitable outcome.
So I think what we've seen is soundings of people like the Squad and other progressives who also aren't super keen on how Establishment Politics have basically run the show for so long with their incrementalism banner as corporations and wealth grow increasingly powerful.
However, none of them will bite. They're not stupid. Republicans are doing a lot of brand damage right now, and I can't think of any Democrat who wouldn't let them proceed with that.
But I think the rabble rousers have been making the attempt to get some anti-Establishment common ground. I expect zero success in that department.

(33,002 posts)It's the younger Repukes saying "gimme, gimme, gimme." The younger ones don't want to put the time and effort into earning their stripes, they just want to get it all NOW. Not that Kevin McCarthy has done much to earn the leadership either, he's only on his 3rd or 4th term. Am I right? But the younger Repukes don't care about seniority, it's all for them and whoever is paying them.
Compare that behavior to the Dem leaders in the House, especially the long-term Dems who have walked the walk for many years. Vast difference that the Repukes will never understand.
Combine that with the fact that most of those so-called "rebels" are thinking they'll be indicted for their actions on Jan. 6th. They're scared shitless but won't admit it. McCarthy can't help them because he might be indicted himself.

(10,479 posts)As much of a vile-soaked piece of vermin we know Matt Gaetz is, and as much as you and I and most of the DU wouldn't piss on his head if his hair was on fire, he and Rep. Omar are co-workers in a 435-seat body.
I'd love for her to tell him to go fuck himself at every opportunity, but the reality is sometimes there are mundane matters of process to discuss with the other side. There are even odd friendships that are struck between polar opposites at times or at least a cordiality. Tip O' Neill said "before 6 p.m. it's all politics", but after that he and Reagan were friendly.
