The Post reported that a network source said Licht asked Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper, who will host coverage in New York, and Don Lemon, who will take over in New Orleans, not to drink, which will mark a change from previous years.
Cohen went viral last year after he went on an apparently booze-fueled rant that included criticism of former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D).
Lemon appeared to be intoxicated while getting his ear pierced on television during New Years in 2017, while Cooper said its like burning your lungs while taking a shot of tequila in 2019.

Don't drink during. Got it. Loophole noted.

(3,370 posts)Cohen may not drink while on air, but they didn't mention the nose candy that he is famously known to love.

(28,849 posts)I find Anderson Coopers drinking quite humorous.
CNN is getting so bland. CNN international is about unwatchable with its Highlights and long commercial breaks. I really dont care about Stanley Tucci Italy. I would rather have Italian news.

(5,104 posts)and Colbert has praised Licht to the skies. And now Christ Light is doing a great job helping to restore CNN.
Having anchors getting sloppy drunk on the air really isn't a good look for a new network that hopes to be taken seriously.

(9,998 posts)Plenty of other times to be serious. People drink on NYE.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)That's serious unprofessional behavior. Come on, man.
SoCalDavidS
(9,998 posts)Its NYE. Nobody is watching for professionalism.
Their ratings will suffer.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)It is completely unprofessional to have on-air talent getting snockered during the broadcast (and while on camera).
I spent my entire career working in television. I know what broadcast standards are.
Good to have an adult back in charge at CNN.

(1,766 posts)Than their constant sucking up to r thugs and bashing Democrats for the stupidest of reasons.
I'd rather they be drunk than act like they do the rest of the year. They might be amusing if they're drunk. Their pandering to r thugs never is.

(5,104 posts)and getting drunk on the air is unprofessional behavior on its face.
Are you serious here?

(41,991 posts)Any other time Id discourage it but as a once a year completely silly off the rails event its fun to watch, particularly in the Left Coast where its early.
And drunk Don Lemon in my beloved New Orleans is adorable. Makes me homesick.
I do hope someone covers Miami so we can see a real live Florida drag queen in a giant stiletto. Its sooooo Floridathe part DeSantos wants to pretend isnt a huge part of the population there. 😃

(4,027 posts)Im secretly pleased. The Kathy Griffith, Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen drunkenness over the years was not working for me. But, who am I to complain? I was pretty sh**faced
Mr.Bill
(24,330 posts)Unlike Anderson Cooper, she can handle her liquor. To me, the whole comic premise of the show was watching Amderson get shit faced on what I sometimes drink before lunch while Griffin just took him apart. Probably all an act, but very funny anyway.
One could have a legit arguement that news anchors shouldn't be covering the biggest party of the year with a comedian, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

(16,364 posts)we've stopped watching....
Drunk New Years Eve has gotten out of hand at CNN. I dont mind if they have a drink or two, as long as they maintain some degree of professionalism. But Andy Cohen - who I cant stand - deliberately gets totally shitfaced and inappropriate. I get the sense that Anderson Cooper feels compelled to join in, against his better judgment. At least Anderson is cute and has an adorable giggle. Don Lemon is a sloppy drunk, and its really not a good look. I hope these guys can have fun without becoming obnoxiously inebriated this year.

(9,185 posts)I've been around drunk people my entire life, and 99.8% of the time, they think they are funnier and smarter when they're juiced. It is painful to watch.
If CNN finds hosts that actually get wittier after they've imbibed...maybe get a shovel and dig up Noël Coward, Dorothy Parker, or Oscar Wilde...then I'd be OK with on-air boozing.
