(31,161 posts)we didn't know, until fairly recently, just how close it came during the Cuban Missle Crisis, with that ONE russian sub officer refusing to launch when the other two officers wanted to let fly with their sub mounted nukes......
I don't think any of the young people have ever watched some of the famous movies from long ago. Dr Strangelove and how I learned to love the bomb?, Fail safe?, what other ones were there????????

(31,161 posts)I read Fail Safe in Jr HS and Seven Days in May. I lived 5miles from a major East Coast Air Force base. Everyone was scared. I remember ambassador Stevenson at the UN saying he was prepared to wait until hell freezes over. So thankfully we got out of that as you said coming closer than we ever knew.

(21,804 posts)with war in Afghanistan. Trump turned the country over to the Taliban, making it necessary to either pull out or to fight the war all over again.
If the US had been bogged down in Afghanistan, we would not have been able or willing to support Ukraine.

Worst that could happen is that we get glare-blindness from all the Russian tanks brewing up...

If Russia has run out, China has some as well, but they
haven't shown a willingness to sell any Hypersonic weapons to Russia.
The Patriot Defense Missile can not shoot down hypersonic missiles
and the US still does not have any hypersonic missiles.
US plans to use first hypersonic deployment, track for 2023.

(65,456 posts)...how many of their nukes even work.
Which ones will launch, which will go the wrong way, which warheads have proper compression design to detonate, etc. Also, how many of their MIRV warheads are actually empty. They've always lied upon their defense numbers.
What they do know is the NATO tactical weapons do work.
I think he'd be "accidented" before other high officials let him launch nukes.
Danascot
(4,699 posts)have been selling nuclear material out of their warheads for years. Those missiles could well be empty by now.
Buckeyeblue
(5,505 posts)It makes me wonder if their nuclear strength is overblown. With Putin and friends grifting Russia for the last 25 years, there hasn't been the money to even maintain their military and defense.
If Ukraine was in a position to be more aggressive, I think Russia would have a difficult time stopping an invasion.

(111,476 posts)and their nuclear arsenal has been maintained exactly as well as the rest of their military. The last guesstimeate I read is that they've got less than 30% readiness.
However, that 30% can still inflict serious damage and the other 70% will do damage even if they just hit without detonating, those things are heavy as hell and would flatten buildings in the inner part of any city.
Still, my main nuclear nightmare is that they'd miss by tens of miles and I'd have to live through it.
Otherwise, I'd get it within the first hour, so no worries,
