Snuggle up and stay safe and warm

(21,513 posts)I put a new heated pad in 1 of my 3 heated cat houses in my garage. Those 3 cats won't budge from their houses, well, until I feed them. Heated water bowl also. Bird feeders stocked. New batteries in our 2 cars.
We are ready.

(2,552 posts)Following the interview of the Buffalo Man on the Street - I stocked up on alcohol in case things get really hairy.
Running out won't be from a lack of planning.

Not looking forward to this one!

(23,368 posts)I have no idea what wind chill is because it just doesn't matter when its this cold. Happy to know this will be over with in just a couple more days. Thank you for the well wishes, malaise.

(23,368 posts)Can't believe my car started this morning. I don't have a garage. The kiddo's car did not start. I told him we aren't even going to try to get that taken care of until Saturday. Stay home and stay warm! The good news is the sun is shining here...but with clear skies tonight is going to be insanely cold.
2naSalit
(86,978 posts)The sun is shining here too but it has warmed up a little. Supposed to be brutal again tonight but not quite as cold. The good part is that tomorrow it will go well above freezing, it's going to snow a lot but it will be above 0. I don't care how deep the snow is if it stays out of deep freeze.
I might go to the store Friday or Saturday.
Stay warm!

(21,798 posts)after yesterday.
The coldest temperatures that I have ever experienced were -20 and -15. And that is not common around here. Occasionally we get a wind chill temp around -15 to -20, but rarely an actual temperature that low.
Although I stay in the north and prefer the snow over hurricanes in the south, I could never live in the Dakotas, Montana, or Minnesota. It's just not in me to deal with the winters there.
MontanaMama
(23,368 posts)The older I get the more I vow I will not move snow until I'm dead. And, here I am.

(21,798 posts)In the past 5 minutes, the lights have blinked about 4 times.
Latest update: 70 mph wind prediction. It's around 35 mph now and increasing. Temp to drop to -3 degrees layer this afternoon. Expected wind chill will be -24 to -30 when the sudden temp drop occurs.
The snow and wind started early. It was supposed to be 35 degrees and rain until afternoon. Still at 32 degrees right now.

(1,766 posts)Northern plains winters.
One day in January, it was 68 degrees at 9 a.m. Then I looked out my LR window and saw a Black Cloud of Doom headed our way.
By 1 pm it was -11. A 79 degree drop in temperature, in less than 4 hours. It was "only" -26 the next morning.
Will never go back, for any reason.
The one positive thing about living there was that I learned the importance of being prepared for an emergency. My basement had racks of canned and packaged goods, and the boot of my car was packed with blankets, water, a folding shovel and other winter survival necessities.
I know that some places are now banning gas stoves, but electric stoves just don't cut it in the Northern Plains. I was damned glad I insisted on a gas stove. It was because I prefer to cook on those in general, but it turned out that, even when the power was out, the family could still have warm meals, coffee, and all of that, without missing a beat. That alone can make a blizzard more bearable.

(492 posts)Im in MN. All stocked up and cozying in, as we say. For Christmas Eve we just have to walk across the street to celebrate with my brother and sister-in-law. Will use a tied guide rope if blizzard is bad (laughthey used to do this between house and barn on the farm). Cats are asleep in their heated beds in our bedroom. Life is good.

(116,006 posts)It's not really that bad here in MN as long as you wear warm clothes and stay off the freeways, especially in rural areas. It's just cold, and we're used to that; the problem for the next day or two will be the wind. The absolute temperature is manageable if you bundle up but the windchill (the effect of cold on exposed skin due to wind) can be really dangerous, and high winds can blow vehicles right off the road. I'm in the city, where the wind speed is mitigated by structures, and I'm staying inside as much as possible anyhow. I have plenty of food and wine, so I'm good.

(21,868 posts)The wind is picking up and they are calling for a wind chill of 50 below.
But the worst part of my walk was hearing the outdoors dogs barking. I hate sitting in my home on a cold, windy night and hearing the barks of the dogs left outside.

Oh, and wind chill warnings down to -35 tonight.

(90,803 posts)That's better than a lot of people are getting but this is Louisiana. Southwest Louisiana. It's been raining for several days now, the ground/roads are primed for freezing solid, and we lost power for four hours the other night from the storms/heavy rains. Silver lining - we go back to the 70's when this is over.

Warming up this weekend, looks like the usual green Christmas here in the Seattle area.

(146,351 posts)Right now, at 2:19 PM, it's still -5 degrees F outside. Winds are supposed to pick up tonight.
There's 15" of snow on top of the round patio table on our balcony deck here.
Look out, everyone to the East of us.

(22,881 posts)God its bitter cold.. and the next two days it will be 40 to 50 mph gusts that pick up that snow and just white it out.. we are stocked up and hoping the pipes don't freeze

(14,151 posts)I live in the mountains of southwest NM. Normally by now, there would be snow on the ground and our high would be 35-40 degrees. Instead weve been dry as a bone with highs in the high 50s and low 60s. Climate change sucks.

(146 posts)Northwest of Denver, it was -14 this morning. -3 and sunny now, which is as good as it's going to get, so I bundled up and shoveled the driveway and sidewalk (I live on a corner lot, so about 40 yards of sidewalk to shovel) Thawing out now...

(73,709 posts)We have "severe winter weather" warnings for the next three days, though I think other large sections of the country are in for worse weather. So long as the electric stays on, I'm good. I've been putting out extra food for the wild animals that come around. Three deer have been sleeping on my lawn, not far from my window, nights. They clean up what the birds don't eat during the day.
Stay safe

(19,205 posts)I've been to the store and stocked up on the necessities. Now it's just a waiting game. This is definitely going to put a hurt on everyone's holiday plans. Sunday will be the absolute worst day for us, weather-wise.
For everyone dealing with this right now, stay safe and warm, and don't forget the animals that live outside. Keep the bird feeders and suet blocks full. They'll need the energy to survive.

(28,824 posts)in Central NC there's a wind advisory and a wind chill advisory. It could get to -7F with the wind chill. And we are definitely not getting the worst of this weather that's coming to so many people right now.
I hope the power holds, and that I remember to keep a tap dripping overnight.
Merry Christmas!!

(32,758 posts)Much more on it's way thru the weekend.
Got lots of warm clothing and a freezer full of food.
My biggest fear is that the pipes will freeze and all that brings. So, when I first got this place it was lights or heat. I went with heat. One of those NG generators cost about $10K on up. I went with a NG space heater that requires no electric. Less than $250 installed. Small house that it will heat, no problem. Lots of antique oil lamps, hand crank radio, just in case.
Our plan is to hunker down in front of heater and cuddle up.
We live on a major 5 lane state road, always the first to be cleared off and kept that way.
Now I'm going to fill up the 5 gallon jugs with H2O. No, tv, no problem we have a hand crank short wave radio.
Best of luck folks.

Still, wishing others well. Don't do anything upidst, and check on your neighbors.

(74 posts)Saved by the mountains this time.
I'm about 40m west of the Colorado Front Range @9000 ft and the mountains blocked us from the worst of it. Less than an inch of powder. It was +22 degrees at midnight and it briefly dipped to -11 around 2am then began to slowly warm. Now a balmy, sunny +21 @ 2:30 pm. I'm also beginning to slowly warm with a little double barrel Herradura Reposado. Especially made for our local purveyor. Broke into the Xmas stash, the in-laws will have to satisfied with what's left.
Prediction for Xmas: 55 degrees! Bring it!
Best to friends at DU!

I just hung two little bird houses in the bushes out front. Theyre both covered with birdseed! And filled the big bird feeder with the rest of the big bag of birdseed. Gonna have to get more at some point.

(1,766 posts)But here in Y'allsville, it's 13 with a wind chill of 8.
It was in the 70s only two weeks ago.
I don't mind cold if it slowly gets cold, stays cold for a while, then slowly gets warmer, but this psycho back and forth stuff is super annoying.

(42,313 posts)Turned out to be just a dirty sensor and easily fixed, but glad we had the trouble then and not now! And the furnace is recently inspected, so not likely to cause problems (as long as the electricity stays on and in town, it would get fixed soonest if it does go out) The stove is gas and we have a fireplace, so...
May all of our DU friend stay as safe and warm!

(16,866 posts)very cold and very windy but lucky for us the big snow did not show up and so no blizzard.
we have dealt with this before although not so much last few years.
remember that is really cold the road salt does not work as well so the roads will be more slippery longer.
I really prefer to drive daylight only in weather like this. County roads are even less fun in weather like this.
Last minute xmas shopping is gonna suck......
