Ukraine.

not "the" Ukraine. I winced a little when Nancy Pelosi put the "the" in front of the country's name.

I associated the use of "the" to the years Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union.

https://time.com/12597/the-ukraine-or-ukraine/

“Ukraine is a country,” says William Taylor, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine from 2006 to 2009. “The Ukraine is the way the Russians referred to that part of the country during Soviet times … Now that it is a country, a nation, and a recognized state, it is just Ukraine. And it is incorrect to refer to the Ukraine, even though a lot of people do it.”

I've heard others use it, I've seen it on this board. I think it's a matter of habit, but decided to post this in case some people think it's correct either way; it actually is not.

I ain't mad at her! omigawd no. but yeah I winced a little.

in my case It's the other half of my family my mom's side that is big is 1st & 2nd Gen (now 3rd etc): Greek-Americans that my sis and I are with.

My dad (1st Gen Ukrainian-American) was an only child. Our only relative his dad died when I was 7. Never met my dad's mom (nor my mom's dad). So we didn't have any influences once we stopped going to Ukrainian Carholic Church back in the late 60's. Though I've (and my sis) have been in "Little Ukraine" in NYC's East Village beyond that time.

So, yes... Ukraine.

many people still use it. I posted as a PSA. I've known for a long time (several years) and for a long time I can't hear "the" Ukraine without it bugging me. Like "pro life" - I just cannot even hear it without getting annoyed. Or the use of "Democrat" when "Democratic" is the correct term.

I'm an English major so you know I'm inordinately attached to words. not that i always get it right of course.

He was very gracious. I have noticed the past few days that the teleprompter operators are not connecting well with the speakers, it was something I noticed in the J6 thing too. But it could just be that everyone is having a hard time speaking, I noticed even Ali Velshi stumbling on his words last night.
