1. Which would do the most good? No religion or no countries?
I suspect that no religion would do the most good.

3. That's a hard call to make.
In most cases the two are inextricably linked. Perhaps that is why John wrote them into the same verse? IMO the bigger problem is maintaining either institution devoid of the corrupted, absolute power over others they - with few exceptions- inevitably gravitate toward.

2. I will never forget. I was walking to work, my evening job across town in Manhattan
I stopped at Rockefeller Center to watch the lighting of the Christmas tree. Got into the job, feeling pretty good, heard the bad news. Had happened not 20 blocks from where I was standing. Can never see that Christmas tree again without feeling a twinge of sadness. Imagine nobody ever getting shot with a gun again. I wonder if you can

4. My personal remebrance of the news -
- I was reporting to work as a Database Manager for the Anti-submarine Warfare Group at CINCLANTFLT in Norfolk, VA the day after and saw that the receptionist was visibly upset. When I asked her if she was OK, she handed me the morning paper and there it was on the front page. My younger brother, far more a Beatles fanatic than I, who was attending BGSU at the time, was so upset at hearing the news he got in his car and started driving. Two hours later he found himself at our parent's home some 60 miles away with no memory of how he got there.
