I want details, as I havent heard much about it.
Did the Dem state legislature manage to gerrymander the Dems out of their seats, or what?

(8,375 posts)NY was not gerrymandered. It was drawn by a commission but in part because Dems tried to put in a ruthless gerrymander that triggered the courts to rule a commission map be used. If they did not try to be greedy with their gerrymandering, perhaps they could have had more favorable seats drawn.

(4,571 posts)by doing some of their own... 'Unfortunately', they overreached and the courts threw out their maps.
At first I was glad for their efforts, but it turned out to have been a mistake...
I think the biggest problem for NY Democrats in this election, was that reproductive choice was under no realistic threat in that state... so the spike in new young voters and women voters, which has been observed in other states, was less likely to happen there... and I presume it didn't happen.
Meanwhile, there was still the inflation problem and the 'midterm for the party in control' problem, and a Republican candidate at the top of the ticket who seemed to be doing better than they should in New York-- while that candidate lost, they turned out GOP voters more than usual.
Here in Michigan, we had an antiquated anti-abortion law hanging over our heads which was a REAL THREAT to abortion rights, and women and young people turned out BIG to support a state constitutional amendment for abortion rights, for the re-election of pro-choice Gov. Whitmer, and for Democrats all the way down the ballot... and we became the biggest blue bright spot in these midterm elections--- and took "the trifecta" for the first time in 40 years, winning both houses of the legislature!
In 2024, there are now going to be 4 or 5 GOP congressional seats which should be highly targeted where Biden won the 2020 vote... and an extremist Republican US House is not going to help them any in their efforts to hold their seats next time. I think New York Democrats need to run hard on the fact that the national Republicans aim to prohibit abortion nationwide-- and they are a threat to reproductive rights, even in New York state!

According to someone here she barely won her own upstate district. Also they should not have redistricted at all, that was a big mistake. I am sure there is more. Low voter turnout in the true blue areas and elsewhere, fortunately it was enough for her to still win though.

Andrew Cuomo was always more afraid of the Left than he was the Right in NY. He appointed some right of center Judges. When the redistricting commission (unilateral disarmament, never a good idea) could not come up with districts, the state legislature did. The republicans sued, the right of center judiciary took over, a special master was appointed and NY was fucked

(50,630 posts)If you go up in the agricultural parts of the state, it is about as red as Iowa. That's a problem because there is a LOT of agriculture in New York State.
