It's only if you visit Twitter itself that they can display promoted tweets (which get them revenue). A tweet embedded here does not get them money.

In effect, I've suddenly and inverdently been navigated to Twitter which I then have to go through the motions of closing out of, then closing out of the OP. it only profits MAGATS and their benefactors including advertisers.

Why would any of us support that?

It sounds a bit like a problem a few people had on DU several years ago, when opening one DU page would also get their browser to automatically open any page that was linked from it. It only happened to a few, and I can't remember what was done to fix it (it may have been related to what is called "prefetching", but I'm not sure).

Does it happen to you with other links on DU - eg just a normal link to a news story in LBN?

Using a PC or laptop it's not a problem.

But if I'm skimming along on my phone and open a tweet OP, welp, my phone is about to open the Twitter app and load . . . something up. Might be the tweet. Might be something else at random.

It's rather annoying.

I'm using chromebook which has its quirks, but I've learned to make the required adjustments when giving up and replacing bulky computers for smaller devices. Sacrificing some functionality I was accustomed to with PC's has been challenging.

I have had to learn how to read an OP subject line through a de-coder lens. Which isn't particularly easy.

I'm in the habit of clicking on an OP which holds interest to me, and too often I click before I grab the decoder.

It's more than annoying, because the slightest hovering motion opens the tweet so that I now have to exit out of both links in order to avoid going through it again repeatedly.

My intention is to avoid serving Musk a single penny of profit.

I know my money won't be missed. But if others join in an informal boycotting, it might send an important message to advertisers.

52. I've never seen an ad on Twitter.

I use Ghostery on Firefox. I have a Twitter account for convenience, though I never tweet. I've seen spam Tweets, which amount to ads, but they're easy to sidestep, and my simply seeing them doesn't add to Twitter's revenue.

I'm also in the habit of generally (1) indicating in the subject line if a post is Twitter-based or Twitter-heavy, and (2) extracting as as much text as possible from a Tweet, along with any images that can be isolated, and posting them after the tweet itself. And when people do (2), we get complaints from some about repetition, so there's no winning!

I think making this a forum rule would be overkill. Making it a forum rule because of quirks of the method you use to browse DU seems like it would be even more overkill! But it probably wouldn't affect my posting on DU.

Put simply, there are many OPs on DU, and especially breaking information, that would never have been promulgated without Twitter. It's just another outlet, and one that's significant enough to be quite a loss if it was "banned", which it seems like the trend this OP is aiming for.

If DU hadn't wanted people to post tweets, its architects wouldn't have added the facility to have tweets display as they do.

I don't watch the videos, mostly out of respect for the people around me (I don't expect the people around me to have to listen to what I'm listening to, and I don't wear ear phones.) I prefer to read the stories.

Frankly, I think the titles of OPs should give some sense of what the post is about--except maybe posts in the DU Lounge.

P.S. I just came across info about a new platform called Blue Sky. it's in the development stage apparently and Jack Dorsey is the owner, I think. Anyhow, that might be worth looking into.

For Star Members at least, we have a new (optional) feature which will allow you to see at a glance if an OP contains a tweet or a YouTube video. On the Latest and Greatest pages, a little blue square after a subject line means it contains a tweet, a little red square means it contains a YouTube video (if it contains both, both will appear):





These indicators can be turned on or off in settings.

We still don't have a firm deadline for the launch of DU4, but it is much closer to the end now than to the beginning. We have actually already started testing with members of MIRT, and things have been going well so far.

I'm well aware that tweets on DU are annoying to some, but obviously we have a lot of members who like them and I think the overall consensus is that we should not just straight-up ban them from the site.

So this seemed like a good compromise -- we allow people to continue to embed tweets, but also provide the ability to easily avoid clicking through to them, if that's what you prefer.

This system won't be able to notify you about tweets in replies, of course, but since OPs seem to be the main point of contention for most people, this should hopefully go a long way to improving things for folks who don't want to see them.

we could essentially allow the auto-trashing of threads which contain a tweet or YouTube indicator. I explained that this is not something built into the current system, but should be technically possible if there's a demand for it. While it may not be available at DU4 launch, I plan to continue making small updates and improvements to DU4 after launch, so it's something we can look into in future.

I also think it is a good idea not to post titles such as... oh my guess what.. and stuff like that. The title should make it clear what the post is about so people don't waste time if they don't want to. And posts with articles linked should also, as well as putting in the really relevant snippet from the article which explains the point and not some preview that requires you to read the entire article and go to a site etc. Maybe you may anyway. Last, please don't post articles linked and sections for sources with a paywall. In addition, don't post the same subject matter numerous times.

I have the people who post "tweet of the ___" on ignore because I never open those threads (and said posters are among the worst when it comes to posting duplicate threads), but I can see them when they make the front page of DU due to recs.

My only complaint when it comes to tweets is that a few people here post tweets that contain false information. They often get a ton of recs because people want to believe them. Not a good look.

A few times a week or month, I have a "Doh!" moment when I feel like I've been had, despite my sensitivity to satire. It's not a major, major deal, but if we're talking about annoyances and timewasting, then those sorts of posts are contenders. I've tried using catchwords to block them, but they still sneak through.

Then there are the very frequent OP titles that are just a personal reaction line. For some reason, they seem to get clicked on more than ones where the subject's made explicit! So there's little incentive to post clear title lines that indicate what the OP's about.
