I know many here like Chris Cuomo, so what's your take on this?

(52,082 posts)So you found an "Independent" guy who says he switched his vote from Fetterman to Oz because of the debate. I say you found a lying Republican who was always going to vote for Oz.
So what exactly did you expect Fetterman and the Democratic Party to do to "prepare" viewers? Fetterman did interviews after his stroke. He disclosed he would need closed captioning. Fetterman disclosed in interviews and at the debate that he has trouble with auditory processing and finding words on the spot.
You wrongly suggest his speech/auditory interpretation problems mean he can't think or reason either, and that is clearly not true. THAT is unfair.
Fetterman's positions have not changed because of his stroke. He will still vote in accordance with those position to protect a women's right to choose and to protect workers. His doctors said he is recovering well and will eventually fully recover. Oz will never recover from being a lying, carpet bagging asshole who wants to kill Social Security and women's right to control their own bodies.
And you suggest that the Democratic Party could have forced Fetterman to leave the race after his stroke, even though he had his stroke on May 13, just 4 days before the May 17 primary. That is not only ridiculous but incredibly cruel. He won the primary in a four-way race while in the hospital four days after the stroke and just hours after undergoing surgery to implant a pacemaker with a defibrillator. But you would have had him propped up in his hospital bed and announcing he was quitting. And how would that have worked out for Democrats, Chris? Please tell us, honestly.

(43,049 posts)interested in whether not strokes interfere with mental processes. I don't think we know enough yet
Rather than wheelcairs, which we know will kill a basketball career, I would like to know more about how strokes affect math teachers, accountants, engineers, and similar brain users.
Btw, from what I know, which is admittedy little, I would never vote for a TV pill pusher.

(52,082 posts)But his doctor said he is fit to serve and hold political office, and said Fetterman exhibited no effects on his cognitive ability or his ability to think and reason after the stroke.
Further, stroke experts agree, problems with auditory processing do not mean someone also has cognitive problems. The brains language network is different from regions involved in decision making and critical thinking.
Just because you have a disability doesnt mean that youre cognitively impaired, Carter said. He is baffled by controversy over Fettermans use of closed-captioning, saying, People who have significant comprehension problems or cognitive problems, captionings not going to help them. Fetterman will use closed-captioning in the debate

Strokes manifest themselves in many different ways, and sometimes cognitive impairment IS part of it. Sometimes its not.
I do wonder why he wont release his medical records. The letter from his doctor is reassuring, but the Former guys Doctor released a letter too!
He has other possibly life threatening conditions on top of the stroke. Her has A Fib, high cholesterol, etc. So I dont think its unreasonable for some undecideds to be hesitant of his health, and to disregard that is putting our heads in the sand.
I will always vote a straight ticket, but for those truly independent voters, I can see how his performance would be disconcerting.

(5,104 posts)Lawrence O'Donnell here seems to endorse a time when news reporters conspired with politicians to hide the illnesses and infirmities of leaders from the public.
Is that the sort of relationship between the press and members of government that he'd wish to return to? I hope not.
Such a situation would be nearly impossible in the internet age even in a state that took draconian totalitarian measures.
People in a democratic republic deserve transparency.
Caliman73
(11,764 posts)O'Donnell is not saying that illnesses should be hidden. He is saying that many of the leaders of the world that we consider, "the cream of the crop" were dealing with significant health problems, that did not prevent them from being the cream of the crop, but which, given the nature of judgement by people who do not know any better, would likely have lead to different outcomes.
Think about World War II without Churchill and/or FDR. Think about the Cuban Missile Crisis with Nixon at the helm instead of Kennedy.
Put those leaders in the media environment we find ourselves in now, they would have been run out of office just because they were perceived as ill.
You are absolutely correct, we do deserve transparency, HOWEVER, we also need to have the ability to understand nuance and complexity, which we absolutely, as a society, do not.
I guarantee you if it was found out that there was extraterrestrial life and they had visited or were coming to visit us, there would be complete panic and chaos as people would not be curious as to what, who, and why they were here, but our basest instincts would kick in.
We need to grow up and get smarter.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)And think you've done a better job that Lawrence O'Donnell advancing the right message.
We have seen leaders, including FDR, Churchill, and JFK who have overcome illness and disabilities. All three of these people are person heros of mine.
The idea that Fetterman can overcome his challenges also resonates with me.
I hope people are of magnanimous mindsets and have expressed optimism that most Americans have had their own struggles or witnessed the grit of loved ones or family members and that ought to make Fetterman relatable.
Fetterman has been transparent. That's the right path IMO.
I'm wishing him the best, both electorially and with his ongoing recovery

(21,169 posts)It's also fair to point out it's the substance that will actually govern and not the style. FDR was in a wheel chair and Chris Cuomo would point out how feeble he is because Chris has no ability to understand substance.

(59,534 posts)After the shame his brother, and to a lesser extent, he brought to the Democratic party, it would have shown genuine work on his own issues if he recognized that in addition to values voters agree with, sufficient intelligence to lead a staff and work on legislative issues, the biggest issue is character, integrity and empathy.
Instead, Cuomo values something he and his brother clearly have, the ability to speak very well. That is a good skill for either a news presenter or politician, but it is secondary. Where it exists, think President Obama, it is a major plus, but note that in 2020, Democrats did not choose the incredibly articulate Buttigieg, but Biden.
Similarly, he ignores the greatest weakness that he, his brother and Oz share, various examples of questionable moral character. With Oz, the worst is that as a doctor, he knowingly mislead people to buy snake oil remedies.
Fetterman was never a top debater, a person whose speeches sang with words that harmonized perfectly to create something inspiring and memorable. That was never his strength. From the doctors, the view is his auditory processing will get better. If it doesn't, as a non doctor, I would suggest that as on most things, as he deals with it, his skill in dealing with it will improve.
Now, as to Oz's weakness, there is no sign he even sees that flaw as a problem, meaning he has no reason to work to improve who he is. Even if he did, it is not that easy.
We could mention, that he seems less concerned with Walker, who has mental issues as we.l as speech problems. Not to mention severe character issues.
Caliman73
(11,764 posts)The problem is that in general, people do not understand how a stroke might affect a certain area of the brain, which it seems with Fetterman, is his expressive communication. People are wrongly thinking that because he has problems finding words that it has to do with his ability to think, reason, and decide. Those are different cognitive processes. You can have a genius IQ and have a problem with aphasia in a certain part of the brain, and not be able to have verbal expression, though you may be able to communicate through a different method and your reasoning is sound.
As you said, being corrupt and unethical is a much bigger and less likely challenge that one overcomes, especially as you said well, if that person doesn't see it, or doesn't care.

(4,268 posts)If we're talking about speech difficulties and all. Fuck you, Cuomo. Long walk. Short pier.
Caliman73
(11,764 posts)They are all thinking that because Fetterman cannot quickly come to the right words, that this is a reflection of his cognitive process. They conflate his struggle with expressive communication with overall cognitive decline. It is not UNFAIR to point out that Fetterman had a hard time finding words.
The problem is that the media glosses over things, they report on the "horserace" aspect only and they frame his struggle with expressive speech as a problem for his job in the Senate. Fetterman has been determined by physicians to have the capacity to be in office. He has the mental capacity to complete the requirements of the job. He may not be the most eloquent speaker at this point, but there are people in the Senate who have NOT had a stroke who do not speak well.
I think that it is a topic worth discussing, however, I find the way the media talks about it to be completely inadequate, and THAT has a real effect on people.
I much prefer Lawrence O'Donnell's take on the issue.

(1,495 posts)Does anyone know if Fetterman ever tested positive for Covid?
When my father was in the hospital recently (my beloved dad died there, on October 18, 2022 due to Covid19), they couldn't do an MRI on him for over 9 days because the doctors said so many people were having strokes and the stroke victims were given priority.
I don't live in PA so I don't have a say, but it would sure suck to have Oz as a Pennsylvania senator.
