This morning I woke up thinking of Freedom Summer, the 1964 project by Civil Rights activists to try to increase the number of Black voters in Mississippi. A close friend of mine, a Tufts University student at the time, participated. He was beaten by Klan members several times, left for dead in a ditch once, and thrown in jail a couple of times, where he was beaten by cops. None of that deterred him, and even now, at 81, he remains politically active.
The song, "Here's to the State of Mississippi," written and performed by Phil Ochs, was inspired by Freedom Summer. With a few lyrics changes, it could be a song for today.
